Pop Quiz

At a recent pub music quiz we were asked to name as many songs as we could that referenced Marlon Brando. My team got 4, one of which was not allowed because "it wasn't on the card".

There were 5 on the card. Any improvement on that?

The usual 'no Google rules' obviously apply.

i can do 3

we didn't start the fire - Billy Joel (c'mon - think of an American pop culture icon NOT mentioned in that song)
China Girl - Bowie
Vogue - Madonna

I seem to be sure that

Kate Bush may've mentioned him, as has Elton John and perhaps Robbie Williams. Lloyd Cole mentions On The Waterfront

lovelyian | 16 July 2008 - 5:19pm

one more

Pretty & Twisted - Dear Marlon Brando

Neil Young

Pochontas by Neil Young
"And maybe Marlon Brando
Will be there by the fire
We'll sit and talk of Hollywood
And the good things there for hire
And the Astrodome and the first tepee
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me"
and i think there's a Springsteen song too,but be buggered if i can remember it. Something about "Dancing with/like Brando "

Goodbye Marlon Brando

Elton John (Reg Strikes Back). Not one of the old queens greatest moments I may hasten to add.

Springer | 16 July 2008 - 5:35pm

Mentioned in passing on...

...We Belong Together by Rickie Lee Jones.

backwards7 | 16 July 2008 - 5:37pm

Surely Half Man Half Biscuit

must have mentioned Brando. Probably in rhyme with Suzanne Dando.

Leedsboy | 16 July 2008 - 6:01pm

Dando, yes. Brando, no

Secret gig contains a couplet along the lines of "Evan Dando Plus One - and his sister Susanne, who lives by the river."

Marlon doesn't get a look in.

loudon wainwright the third

"I was Brando I was Dean"
can't remember which song, but it was before he turned into Richard Digance.

"Schooldays"

I might be wrong, and if I am, surely there SHOULD be a Lloyd Cole song with a Brando reference.

bingham | 16 July 2008 - 6:47pm

The 5 on the card were ...

1. Billy Joel - "We Didn't Start The Fire"
2. Madonna - "Vogue"
3. Elton John - "Goodbye Marlon Brando"
4. David Bowie - "China Girl"
5. Neil Young - "Pocahontas"

We didn't get Madonna or Elton John. The one we did have that was refused was Joni Mitchell's "In France They Kiss On Mainstreet":

"We'd all go looking for a party
Looking to raise Jesus up from the dead
And I'd be kissing in the back seat
Thrilling to the Brando-like things that he said"

Other refusals were 'Back To Tupelo' by Mark Knopfler and 'Eyeless' by Slipknot, neither of which I've heard.

But with all of the above I may launch an appeal.

It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City-Bruce Springsteen

"Walk like Brando into the Sun " knew i'd get it sooner or later.
A mate said "Nah it's a Bowie song" didn't realise he'd done a version.

paul beard | 16 July 2008 - 8:38pm

A pedant writes

Maybe they were looking for both words Marlon + Brando and in that order. Don't you just hate it when that happens, especially if a beer prize is at stake.

I would sue.

Beany | 16 July 2008 - 9:04pm

On my iPod last night..

..up popped Loudon Wainwright doing "School Days", an old song that he's re-recorded for an excellent new record. First verse:
"In Delaware when I was younger
I would live the life obscene
In the Spring I had great hunger.
I was Brando. I was Dean"

You see, I think the person who devised this quiz should be run out of town on a rail because you simply can't set a question that might have hundreds of correct answers and ask people to come up with the five that you happen to have on the card. It's idiotic.

Exactly ...

The problem is we're not really in a position to complain, or indeed ever show our faces in that particular pub again. It was the usual format, the quiz master announced the running order - general knowledge, music, history, food, sport, geography, current affairs etc. - and explained that you could play a joker in advance to double up on a particular round. We had a bit of a debate and my suggestion that we play the joker on the music round was over-ruled in favour of the food round, by an amateur chef, who we'll call Ben because that's his name.

By half time, during which tiny sausages were served, we were placed 2nd. We played our joker and the first question after the break was 'Who won the FA Cup in 1972' or some such nonsense. Before we could query what was going on we were asked to name the city that hosted the last Winter Olympics. At this point Ben stood up in the middle of the pub and pointed out fairly loudly that they appeared to have skipped a round and shouldn't we be answering questions on food? Silence descended as the entire place stared at us and, after a short pause, the man with the mic said "The sausages were the f*****g food mate! Now, moving on ... what year was Ali's Rumble in the Jungle?"

We came fifth.

StevenC | 17 July 2008 - 2:17pm

That's fantastic

Always, Always play the joker on the music round. You blog on the Word website for godsake.

Leedsboy | 17 July 2008 - 4:33pm

I know ... I know ...

I was being overly polite with people I barely knew. If we had played the joker on the music round we would have won by 4 points, and be sure that I will never let them forget that.

StevenC | 18 July 2008 - 12:53am

And another

Joni Mitchell's In France They Kiss On Main Street

And I'd be kissing in the back seat
Thrilling to the Brando like things he'd say

Dr.Robert | 17 July 2008 - 9:56am

Van Morrison

has a song on his Hard Nose The Highway album that mentions Brando. It might be called The Great Deception?
