In tribute to the great lady who very sadly passed away yesterday.

Another bad day

Blimey, and I haven't got my head around Elisabeth Sladen yet. A big loss - X Ray Spex were more or less the best group ever.

Sad news

I loved X-Ray Spex and can vividly remember seeing them on TOTP for the first time as a youngster. Even more of a shame as Poly had just released a new solo album that was getting some positive reviews and publicity.

Very sad

She lived around here, and I used to see her about occasionally. I once had a chat with her in a local cafe - she was lovely. I loved X-Ray Spex as a teenager as well, and I thought her voice and image were brilliant. RIP

Oh Bondage Up Yours!

A title so brilliant she didn’t even need to write the song, but the song was brilliant too. I saw X-Ray Spex at the RAR gig in Victoria Park 1978 with the Clash, Steel Pulse etc. Great group, very sad day.

Coincidence

I was reading Hail Hail Rock & Roll by John Harris yesterday, in which Poly Styrene is mentioned. 'Didn't she die last year?' I thought to myself, before realising I was thinking of Ari Up of The Slits.

R.I.P

Yes

Read somewhere recently (may have been here) that she was very ill but then heard her a couple of weeks ago on Liz Kershaw's show so wasn't sure if that was really the case as no mention was even made of her being ill when she was being interviewed. Presumably her choice.

To echo a tweet earlier - 'Oi Cancer - Up Yours!'

far too bloody young

Legacy

Poly Styrene/Marianne stated that she had hoped her legacy would be something spiritual in keeping with her beliefs.
She (apparently) said: If I can't have that, 'Oh Bondage Up Yours' will suffice.

Used to have a large version of this picture on my wall

It might just be me but...

...I was thinking earlier that Germ Free Adolescents, or maybe just Polly's singing 'vibe' on it reminded me of something. And I've just realised it was that (below). Not sure what it is about the two that occupies the same space (in my mind), but thought I'd throw it out there...

Memories

I stumbled acrosss "Live @ The Roundhouse 2008" CD & DVD in JB HiFi this month. Glad I bought it. Revives memories of seeing X Ray Spex at, I think, Coventry Tiffanys 32 years ago.
Songs sound as fresh now as all those years ago.
A unique voice and an original artist who will be sadly missed.
