Poll: do you like the arrows?

Albert Edward's picture

As promised, here's a poll on whether or not you like the arrows.

In the first instance please just click the UP arrow on the corresponding answer box, which should appear below this post. Please don't click a down arrow on either. Comments also welcome, of course.

Apologies in advance if it all goes pear-shaped. It's the first time I've tried it (maybe even a first for the site?). So here goes...

1

YES

I do like the arrows.

Albert Edward | 1 October 2009 - 10:49am

NO

I do not like the arrows.

Albert Edward | 1 October 2009 - 10:50am

This is conceptually difficult

I just clicked the DOWN arrow on the NO thread to register my disapproval but it actually got recorded as a vote for!

What if I click the DOWN arrow on the YES thread - is this a vote for or against?

Duuhhh!

Where's the don't care box?

0
Five-Centres | 1 October 2009 - 10:55am

Beat me to the punch, Five-C

0
nigelthebald | 1 October 2009 - 10:57am

No

I do not like them.

2
RobertC | 1 October 2009 - 10:57am

Are they

a Power Pop Beat Combo I have yet to hear?

0
TedLoaf | 1 October 2009 - 11:00am

Yes

They were a 70s pop group, one of whom wrote "I love rock n roll"!

Twangothan | 1 October 2009 - 2:17pm
stimpy | 1 October 2009 - 3:01pm

Well that's defeated that then.

Oh my sides.

0
RobertC | 1 October 2009 - 11:04am

while you're thinking

here's The Arrows and the original of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"

2
Sheev | 1 October 2009 - 11:06am

Whoops

Sorry Sheev, you beat me to it. Guilty as charged of Spontaneous Reply Syndrome.

Phil "The Power" Taylor

I find annoying...though i have a lot of respct for Raymond van Barneveld.

Arrows ? mebbes aye, mebbes naw

I think they make it all too easy to drive-by slap a post.

Conversely, I think the up arrow is actually helpful, for where someone expresses an opinion and I don't have much to add beyond "Me too". But given the scope for mischief with the down arrow, I can see the case for their removal entirely.

When you say "pear-shaped"...

You really should clarify whether you mean the common European pear (Pyrus communis) or P. boissieriana, which is native to the Kopet Dag region of the Turkmenistan-Iranian border. The distinction is an essential one, because...

[Hooked off sharpish]

I like the up arrows

but not the down arrows. How do I vote?

0
Leedsboy | 1 October 2009 - 11:44am

These arrows

I think they're great.
I like being able to indicate I like or dislike something without having to add a "What he said" type comment.
Sometimes I just don't have anything more to add.
I also think that should held to keep threads a bit more compact without the addition of simple agreement or dissent.
If you want to keep typing those short comments, just carry on.

Carl Parker | 1 October 2009 - 12:15pm

Yes but

it's good to know who agrees or disagrees too. I'm anti-arrows. Mostly people seem to ignore them anyway, and if they do use them it seems to be piss taking.

I think that the arrows'...

... poll functionality gives them a potential new lease of life, and it would be great to see this explored further, polling favourite tracks off albums, favourite Martin Scorsese films, etc. I do like a poll, me.

However, I sometimes think they're deployed in a mean and nasty way.

0
Albert Edward | 1 October 2009 - 12:36pm

oh...

do we have arrows now?

*gets coat*

0
Oscar Patterson | 1 October 2009 - 12:46pm
Vulpes Vulpes | 1 October 2009 - 12:47pm

Uncle Monty | 1 October 2009 - 12:53pm

I don't use 'em

expect for the wilful and childish negging of anything Bargepole posts.

3
Captain Underpants | 1 October 2009 - 1:09pm
Steven C | 1 October 2009 - 1:14pm

I don't use them - and who is SHE!?

Because I just knew this kind of thing (ie offence taken, paranoia triggered etc)could happen.

And it did. Smuggitty old me.

Anyway, I post here not to add my two'pennorth to the voting buttons debate (even though I just have) but rather to praise to the skies your user picture up in the top right corner.

Is that Ingrid Pitt? She's a corker and no mistake! Lovely.

0
Beezer | 1 October 2009 - 1:24pm

Yes

It is, and that picture's a cracker, too.

Incidentally, I've just tried to click an arrow (an Up arrow for a comment made by Chris G on the Mike Read thread) and a box came up saying 'Karma error: timeout'.

What does this mean?

0
Albert Edward | 1 October 2009 - 1:36pm

I'm pleased you've asked

It means there's been a karma error and it's timed out.

Feel free to neg me for that wholly useless ironic reply.

Very well done on the Ingrid. You have taste by the skipful.

0
Beezer | 1 October 2009 - 1:59pm

NO to both up and down arrows

get rid - they've just caused no end of bickering.

Completely at odds with The Word`s "No Star Rating" stand.

0
Retro Man | 1 October 2009 - 1:39pm

Good in theory...

... useless in practice.

0
Nicodemus | 1 October 2009 - 2:34pm

I think we should add a sideways arrow

for those posts for which the only valid reply would be "meh."

0
stimpy | 1 October 2009 - 3:03pm

I don't use them.

This isn't Facebook you know.

0
Neil Jung | 1 October 2009 - 3:06pm

NEEEEEEERDS!

I´m innocent, of course.
