Poised Over The Skip Button

STD's picture

Unlike many on this site I'm rather partial to a bit of Belle & Sebastian. But whenever I play the "Fold Your Hands..." album I'm always ready to hit skip as soon as track 7 begins. (Opening line "He raped me in the chalet lines"). I've had this album for ten years and I think I've only ever heard this song twice (when ripping it to other media I leave this song out).
I remember having a similar problem with "The Boiler" on "This Are Two Tone".
Several musicians have written some pretty harrowing stuff before killing themselves and some words may just be too close to the bone on a personal level so...
Do you have songs in your collection you don't play purely because of the subject matter?

The Shankhill Butchers

by the Decemberists on The Crane Wife. It just seems wrong in the context of the rest of the cd and is a grim story. I admit I can't recall much detail about it right now but that's because I skip it every time.

Grim...

...I used to skip it, but it's grown on me. If you think about it, most of the tracks on that LP are grim - possibly all of them. Perfect Crime #2 is the one I might jump.

Really?

Perfect Crime #2 is my favourite song on the album. Decemberists getting just a little bit funky...

I'm a B&S fan

But I hardly ever listen to Fold Your Hands… – easily their worst album.

Same here

It's somehow made worse by the fact that 'Chalet lines' is immediately followed by 'Nice day for a sulk'.

However the album as a whole does have some crackers - 'Don't leave the light on baby' and 'The wrong girl' being two that spring to mind. The video for the latter is hilarious:

Gyroscope by Boards Of Canada off of Geogaddi

Upsetting. Really upsetting. Spoil your day upsetting.

Interesting...

...I always quite enjoyed that track, and never found anything upsetting about a female voice reading out a string of numbers under a repetitive beat loop. What upsets me is the looped manic laughter, over a mournful organ theme, that is the Bonzos' "Slush". Once tried listening to that in a darkened room, and had to turn the light on. Still don't know why I find it so disturbing.

Slush is an odd one isn't it?

I always maintain it must have had a strong influence on the Butthole Surfers.

Lay A Little Light On Me - Strawbs

Some words (eg m*s*e*b*t*) just shouldn't be used in songs.

The Intense Humming Of Evil.

I don't actually skip it, but I do think skipping this track from the Manics' "The Holy Bible" is forgivable. It's so aurally and lyrically bleak that you have to be in quite a chipper mood to get through it.

4st 7lb

has the same effect on me - very unsettling.

I've just remembered another one

which is "Trust" from Billy Bragg's "Don't Try This At Home" lp. Again, kudos for taking on a difficult subject, but I'm skipping this.
