Poets that sit next to your music

Just wondered if we can put together a list of poets who turn up via the MP3 shuffle sitting next to your usual rock n roll stuff?

My choice is Les Barker who was celebrated on a 2CD set with his poems read by Ken Bruce, Terry Wogan, Ned Sherrin, Mike Harding, Johnnie Walker, Paul Gambaccini, Mark & Lard etc etc

There's not much footage around but here he is "Teaching Geography To George W Bush" and more

I did want to put the Daschund poem up but this is afterall a family site

It seems we are a poet free zone....

Here is another one....Black Cab Sessions. Chapter Twenty-Eight: Benjamin Zephaniah

joy to odd

I have loads of poetry , it was the fact that the randomiser picked two poems and two drumming exercises and only one song which I found funny .

I love reading poetry...

but I don't have anyone reading poetry on my i-pod.

Here's a beautiful poem in Italian for you written by Giuseppe Ungaretti...

Mattina

M'illumino
D'immenso

Even if you can't understand it, the words sound beautiful.

Sir John Betjamin

His two albums recorded in the seventies with Charisma are well worth checking out.

The aforemetioned JCC "Disguise In Love" and "Snap crackle and Bop" are outstanding.

and LKJ "Forces of Victory" and " Inglan is a Bitch" both brilliant including fine music by the great Dennis Bovell Dub Band.

also I have a fine anthology tape of "The Liverpool Poets"

plus Roger McGough's excellent "Summer With Monica"

There was also an feature on Five Live about the "spoken word" artist Polar Bear/Steven Campden which was very interesting and encouraging that there are a bunch of younger artists out there who are not just spouting the usual hip hop bling culture cliches. He has a My Space account if you want to hear a sample of his stuff.

Polar Bear recently featured

Polar Bear recently featured on Bespoken word BBC Radio 4 .

Summer with has recently been on Radio 7 .

And the Book Slam Podcast is generally worth a listen to .

Kate Fox ( see same name myspace page ) is also worth a shot .

I would find it hard to believe that most people with a love of songs, would not have an interest in poetry .

It's not on there at the moment

But I have got Billy Collins, some beautiful stuff on there.

Where can i find thge Liverpool poet stuff, that would be nice. I have some old Scaffold and Mersey Sound Records that should get more of an airing.

Does having Simon Armitage's Band The Scaremongers on there count...

Poets as musicians? I wonder how many there are?

Sorry I didnt get back earlier

The Liverpool Poets is part of the Penguin Spoken Word library collections. Mine's a double cassette tape a mate sent me from the UK. It includes Henri, Mcgough and Patten in their glory. I also believe the Liverpool Scene LPs are available if you look around (amazon, E-bay etc) Hope this helps. and.... happy listening!
