Podcast Recommendation

humphreym's picture

I've got a long drive ahead of me tonight and tomorrow, and was wondering if the massive could recommend some good podcasts for me to listen to? My supply of Word (original, and backstage) and Collings And Herring have been used up, so I'm now podcast-less! Any ideas?

Adam & Joe

Their west country version of Chritian Bale's freak out last week was genius.

Here's a quick list of some podcasts I listen to...

Adam & Joe (BBC 6 Music)
Fighting Talk (BBC Five Live)
Football Weekly (Guardian)
The Hollywood Saloon (these are very long but extremely thorough and well made)
Mark Kermode film reviews (BBC Five Live)
Media Talk (Guardian)
The Perfect Ten with Phill Jupitus & Phil Wilding
TheGame (Times)

Jon Richardson (BBC)
Jonathan Ross (BBC)
www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts

Guardian Science Weekly (very interesting)
Guardian Film Weekly (great show)
Guardian Media Talk (a bit too London-centric, but sometimes of interest)
Guardian Music (hit and miss but sometimes good guests)
www.guardian.co.uk/podcasts

I like

Adam and Joe
Phill and Phil
Stephen Fry's Podgrams
David Mitchell has a few out - though I haven't had time to listen yet
The Moth (stories recorded live on stage) - one was by Joe Jackson
Friday Night Comedy (Radio 4)
I'm also a sucker for the Humphrey Camardello old radio plays - Agatha Christie mysteries in particular
and ..er.. 11 O'clock comics - but that might not float your boat
drive safely :-)

Paste Magazine

I would agree with most of the above but i'd also heartily recommend the Paste Culture Club.

A few good US ones

This American Life - different topics each week, but normally very interesting stories. A bit like Radio 4.
The Dinner Party - A short, pithy look at the week's news.
Le Show - Harry Shearer of Simpsons fame. Mostly about US politics, but the delivery is great and it can be very funny.
Sound Opinions - A couple of opinionated Chicago music hacks talking about music.
NPR All Songs Considered - fairly Word friendly music.

Speechification

Various podcasts of Radio 4 programmes, updated regularly. Excellent stuff.

0
Kernow | 22 February 2009 - 12:00am

you reckon?

I've always found their selection rather boring, there's tonnes more interesting stuff on Radio 4. I've just about given up on them.

Also, NPR's Wait Wait.... Don't Tell Me

It's sort of an NPR version of The News Quiz but with guests. Often it's very funny.

NPR

There are some crackers on NPR - All Songs Considered - informed musical discussion ranging across Rilo Kiley, Tinariwen, Radiohead, etc. There is also an All Songs Considered live show podcast which had a fantastic Tom Waits show from the recent tour.

Tsk

Noone's mentioned Danny Baker's 5 Live 606 on Tuesday nights (it even got a plug by the mighty Giles Smith in this month's Word). A truly great show - you don't need to like football to enjoy it. Available on iTunes.

Sounds good

Gonna give it a try

I would add: * Digital

I would add:

* Digital Planet - from the BBC if you like Tech
* Folk and acoustic with Mke Harding - from the BBC
* Terry Wogan - light hearted banter plus the 'Janet & john' stories
* Best bits of the Today programme - 2 daily dollops each about 10 minutes long
* Business Daily from the BBC
* Media Show the BBC - like the Guardian equiv
* Traces of Nuts - rude sketches and fart jokes - bit hit and miss
* Radio 4 choice

The BBC stuff is great especially that from R4. I did a 150 miles trip today and listened to a variety of podcasts - great use of travelling time !

The Onion

Spoof news.

Some from left field

This may be too late for your journey, but I had to get my 2c in!

These are mostly weekly or less frequently:

Thinking Allowed BBC R4 - excellent recent discussions on laddishness, drunkenness, the working class love of large check patterned clothing in the 1800s

No Agenda - a couple of dudes discuss the news from both sides of the Atlantic across a mostly good skype connection. They're trying to keep Obama honest.

NPR Car Talk - "the funniest show on the radio happens to be about car repair" hosted by a couple of Italian Bostonites.

The Bugle - TimesOnline, satirical look back at the week's news from both sides of the Atlantic from a couple of British comedians.

The Economist - I like "From The Paper" the best

BBC World Documentaries - wide range of subjects covered

Diggnation - a couple of dudes discuss the best stories from Digg.com over a couple of beers

The Bottom Line with Evan Davis BBC R4 business round table discussion.

Plus: what the others said.

PS most of Ricky Gervais' podcasts promote his paid shows marketed as audio books. However he did do 3 for free that should be still there: The Ricky Gervais Bonus Hour, Best of Ricky Gervais Show Series One and NME Radio test broadcast. It's mostly Karl Pilkington with Ricky and Steve steering the discussion.

PFacto | 22 February 2009 - 6:28am

The Bugle

Is easily the best non-BBC podcast around. Laugh out loud funny every single time.

0
Niks | 22 February 2009 - 11:17am

The Skeptics Guide to the Universe

Superb popular science / debunking paranormal & pseudo-science stuff, and usually funny into the bargain - 5 presenters too, which helps keep it entertaining.

Hear hear!

SGU is excellent listening. For anyone into that kind of thing, also check out the Little Atoms podcast from Resonance FM which does a similar thing from a British perspective and the Point of Inquiry podcasts from the Centre for Inquiry.

0
Fraser M | 22 February 2009 - 8:51pm

I agree with most of the above

Could I add From Our Own Correspondent?

Excellent 30 minute essays from BBC reporters round the World.

0
Gordon Kerr | 22 February 2009 - 3:43pm

I listened to...

Football Weekly (Guardian), The Blueprint, and The Moth podcasts, and thought they were great, especially The Moth. Looking forward to listening to the others. Thanks again to everyone for the recommendations.

humphreym | 22 February 2009 - 9:08pm

I listened to some of the above

Unfortunately I couldn't listen to the girl on Paste Culture Club without being reminded of the following:

0
Simon Ford | 23 February 2009 - 12:55pm

May I just add

Coverville- weird, wild and sometimes wonderful cover versions
Front Row Highlights
Great Speeches in History
Real Time with Bill Maher
RTE-Off the Shelf- easily the best book review show
Skeptoid- the host gently trashes false science, conspiracies and assorted falacies

and NPR is a treaure trove, most mentioned above.

Ooh, and of course, The Word

A little late here

but given the podcast has only just started, I couldn't be any earlier. Skinner & Baddiel are doing World Cup podcasts again at Absolute Radio, first one is up now. They were good value at the last World Cup as I recall, so worth tuning into again.

EDIT - While I'm on, the BBC's Americana podcast is very good too. No, not about men with beards living in shacks wrestling with banjos, but a kind of Letter From America idea. Not as good, obviously, but still interesting.

1
Molesworth | 27 May 2010 - 8:10am

Don't worry I'm even later

Totally agree with the bugle and baddiel and skinner - their coverage of the world cup has been the best by a mile...

as for other podcasts if you liked this american life then you'll also like the moth, a short storytelling podcast, with many of the same contributors...
http://www.themoth.org/podcast

or here's a great comedy podcast from australia called the sweetest plum
http://sweetestplum.libsyn.com/

also enjoy the ricky gervais podcasts, he just did a great guide to the world cup...

0
cyril | 11 July 2010 - 4:24pm

Answer me this ****
Best of natural history radio (BBC) ****
Coca cola football league show ****

History of the world in 100 objects (BBC) ****
In our time (BBC) ***
