Play it Sister...

Have you ever wanted to see some old black and white footage of a 50 year old female evangelist from Arkansas riding into a rain sodden train station in Manchester on a horse and cart to rip into some tasty blues riffs on an electric guitar?

Of course you have.

Has there ever been a more incredible female artist than Sister Rosetta Tharpe?

Genius

If someone were to ask me what my favourite single second was in the entire history of music on TV, it's probably the shape Sister Rosetta throws at about 1'45" during the solo in this clip:

Just the best...

You know, I was sat on a minibus not so long ago, heading for a "gentlemen's night-out" with some footballist chums of mine, the majority of whom were of a younger vintage then myself. A track by a famous Australian woman came over the PA and an acquaintance rhetorically, though loudly, asked "has there ever been a better singer than Kylie ?"

I thought of Dusty, Ella, Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, Anita O'Day, Aretha, Astrud Gilberto, Streisand, one or two others, but I didn't bother replying. We were only about 15 minutes from the pub - there seemed little point.

And all of this was before I'd even heard of Sister Rosetta.

Where is she now we need her talent more than ever?? You-tube, I suppose.
