Pixies
Posted by JohnW on 4 June 2010 - 2:34pm.
When:
3rd June 2010
Where:
The Troxy, London
Comments:
It's the Pixies. They're the same every time I've seen them. Normally that wouldn't be a selling point but they're the Pixies so it is.
The power is astounding. No sooner has one epic started than it's finished and on to the next one.
I like the little touches like Kim calling Frank, Chas or trying to have a conversation with 2,500 people. Joey sings backing vocals on one song so he only gets a mic for that one song. They played Monkey Gone to Heaven 2nd song so we knew we were in for a belter and better still they played Cactus (my favourite) which they don't always do.
I've not been to the Troxy before and it's a good place to see a band... once we got in. We arrived 20 minutes before the main band was due on stage but took longer than that to get in. Scanning of tickets was being done by a legion of iPhones!!! This is one more job that they're not really up to. Parking very nearby was a doddle - I'll be happy to go again - I hope more bands choose this over Brixton Academy.
The Audience:
Pretty mixed bunch of new and old fans - this was supposed to be a fans gig and there was a lot of singing along going on (my throat's a bit sore this morning!) even near the back where the loud talkers usually are!
Food & Drink:
Beer wasn't cheap and water was £2.00 a bottle which is pretty outrageous.
It Made Me Think...:
I'd like to go back tonight and do it all over again.

I am going tonight,
and you've whetted my appetite. It's all a bit of rush for me to get home after work and get out again, so what time did the Pixies go on? I don't want to miss out. Thanks for the tip about the queueing
I thought they were going through the motions for the first half
looked a bit more interested when they played the more obscure stuff.
Support 8pm, pixies 9 is the official time but they came on a bit later than that, about 9.15
thanks for that
I don't get to many gigs these days so I'm really looking forward to tonight. Last time I saw the Pixies was at Glastonbury in the 80s. And I'm taking son, 15, who's a huge fan, so I'm hoping for a great night
I'd a great time
The Troxy is a really nice venue. Although they asked for requests by e-mail there were no real big surprises , but i didn't mind.
I even bought a t-shirt.
Pretty difficult...
...to surprise anyone when your back catalogue is 20 years old and not being renewed.
That said, I've seen them 4 times since the reunion, and not heard "Bam Thwok" yet. Shame: it's a little corker.
Trompe le Monde was well represented
6 tracks from Trompe le Monde! I always felt the last album was overlooked, was great to hear Alec Eiffel.
I came down from South Wales, so had never been to the Troxy before, and was very impressed in terms of size (about 2000 capacity I guess) and layout. Seems like the kind of place where there is no such thing as a bad seat! My only previous Pixies experiences were at festivals, which I don’t think suit them well, given that they aren’t much of a show-pony band, and half the fun comes from looking at whatever Kim Deal is up to!
I spent the whole night at the front singing along and shuffling about like a fool.
I swear Kim waved at me personally at the end! At least that's what I'm going to tell the grandkids.
I also found the iphone ticket scanning operation a bit strange, however the idea of printing your own tickets whilst avoiding Ticketmasters scandalous booking fee + postage costs is one I’d like to see more of.
A great night, a great band in a perfect venue. Have fun at the Friday show, wish I was going again!
New to me too
I imagine that most London concert goers have never been to the Troxy before either. I don't know how long it's been hosting rock events but I'd never even heard of it before.
As far as printing your own tickets without charge, this, at the moment, was sadly a one off, we often get the choice of printing them ourselves for other venues but we are charged for the convenience of saving the promoter for doing so.
