Pictures of Lily

My thoughts have turned to Brookside's Karen Grant, without doubt my top student pin-up of the mid-Eighties.

She followed Kim Wilde, Blondie and Olivia Newton-John into my heart, and was replaced by Ally Sheedy then Kylie Minogue, and so it went on, until I stopped putting up poster and got a wife.

Sadly, I can't post a Karen picture here, though I did find only one on the net.

So who was in your dreams way back when?

Karen Grant...

There's a blast from the past...right up there with Tracy Corkhill!

Where to start...I'll see your Ally Sheedy and raise you Molly Ringwald...!

All of Legs & Co, through Debbie Harry, to Lori Singer (Julie in the tv version of Fame), to Belinda Carlisle, to the '83 - '85 incarnation of Madonna, to Tiffany (I had a trailer trash thing...) ending with plain Jane super brain from Neighbours.

However, I still get a "girl band" du jour calendar as a joke Xmas present from my younger brother every year. Over the past 15 years, these have ranged from the Spice Girls, Dannii Minogue, J-Lo and Girls Aloud. None can match the impact Debbie Harry had on me singing Heart of Glass all those years ago!

John Waite | 22 August 2008 - 10:17am

"joke Xmas present..."

Yeah right...

ivan | 22 August 2008 - 10:47am

Honest guv....

I've even asked for a Blondie one. The oh-so-knowing chap in HMV said "He thought they had some 30 years ago"

John Waite | 22 August 2008 - 1:29pm

Now then

Starting back in school.......

Sally Thomsett
Wendy Craig (yes i know...)
Carly Simon (THAT album cover)
Tina Weymouth
Gaye Advert
Tennis poster girl
Debbie Harry
......lengthy gap
........Kylie! Actually Dannii is an attractive girl but is almost wholly artifical judging from photos dating from when she originally appeared.

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 10:26am

Wendy Craig!

Actually, my mum & dad told me that I had a huge crush on her when I were a kid during the Butterflies era! Also, apparently, Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched...

Debbie Harry was my first real pin-up crush, along with Kate Bush and silent movie star Louise Brooks.

Viv Albertine from The Slits, Gaye Advert and Tina Weymouth too - maybe something Freudian about girls with guitars going on here!

Retro Man | 22 August 2008 - 11:02am

Everyone

...had a crush on Wendy Craig in my experience.

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 11:08am

Some of us still have

And Mother Makes Three - phwoar!

Five-Centres | 22 August 2008 - 11:23am

when I was a small child...

Ms Graig accidentally nearly ran me over with her car.

Riccardo Gargiulo | 22 August 2008 - 11:48am

Which bit was accidental?

The running over bit, or the 'nearly' bit?

Gatz | 22 August 2008 - 12:23pm

Both

and I spent ages trying to make that unambiguous...
unlike Micheal Parkinson - now he was trying to knock me off my bike, but that's another story.

Riccardo Gargiulo | 22 August 2008 - 3:24pm

Wendy Craig

Not me. I never fell for that simpering routine. But Elizabeth Montgomery! Now you're talking!!

Carl Parker | 22 August 2008 - 11:09pm

Seemed to go

for redheads

Carol Decker
Kate Bush (with a red light behind her)
Tori Amos (dyed)

Beany | 22 August 2008 - 10:59am

Cathy Hargreaves

from Grange Hill, in the Tucker era.

kb | 22 August 2008 - 11:27am

Ooh yes

I was obsessed with her too. There was a girl in the year below who looked just like her, but my friend beat me to it.

Five-Centres | 22 August 2008 - 2:16pm

Disappointingly

I googled her once, as she is now. Complete change, looks NOTHING like I remembered her.

kb | 22 August 2008 - 2:33pm

Never mind kb

Just found this.

A bit raunchy for kids tv isn't it?

Tezzyboy | 24 August 2008 - 12:21am

Blimey

Thank you for rooting that out. What was going through my teenaged head? And the 1970s really were the austere 1950s weren't they? Imagine a 2008 remake of that scene - the skirt lengths, the blouses, the hairstyles, the lyrics, the boys' polite applause...

kb | 27 August 2008 - 11:46am

to quote a song i've oft posted here

"I'd love to have it off with Susannah Hoffs"

Still.

Glynis Barber in Dempsey and Makepeace; well i mean to say, Grrr and so on.

ivan | 22 August 2008 - 11:56am

Personally...

...I think Susanna Hoffs looks better now than she did then; as evidenced by the picture on page 72 of this month's Word.

Lucas Hare | 24 August 2008 - 7:22am

She still owes me a Fiver

True fact.

Springer Bell | 12 September 2008 - 8:36am

Scouse

I've just been interviewed by Jimmy Corkhill about the Beatles while watching the ferry cross the Mersey. How scouse is that?

As for heartthrobs - Wendy James all the way.

Jamie_Bowman | 22 August 2008 - 12:28pm

plus one

for the Wendy!

ivan | 22 August 2008 - 1:03pm

Two words.

Jenny Agutter.

Vulpes Vulpes | 22 August 2008 - 12:51pm

it all starts with

it all starts with Kylie!

philippa Forrester, ex childrens present, now on radio 4, [natch]

sherilyn fenn

Minnie Driver

Gillian Anderson,

blake | 22 August 2008 - 1:25pm

Uh-oh

Gillian looks none too pleased about being placed fourth.

Gatz | 22 August 2008 - 6:16pm

Chronological order, rather

Chronological order, rather than some TOTPs chart.
Believe me, sir, otherwise the redheads would always win out!

blake | 29 August 2008 - 1:55pm

Yes, Sherilyn Fenn

....had her poster on my wall in her Twin Peaks days...

David Sutherland | 22 August 2008 - 4:10pm

Back then:

Ayesha from Lift Off (that dates me).

Also the mermaid (Marina?) from Stingray (yes I know...but i WAS young).

Bit later: Anyone remember Julie Ege and Madeline Smith from Hammer's golden age? I think I would still blush if I met them. You can put me in the Gaye Advert fan club too.

Nowerdays the divine Julie Delpy, who IMHO should definitely be a Word Cover Star. After all, she's released an album an' all.

Jim Thomas | 22 August 2008 - 1:57pm

Madeline Smith!

With the big, er, eyes?

Five-Centres | 22 August 2008 - 2:18pm

Caroline Munro

From a similar Hammer Horror, Bond Girl background as Madeline Smith.

Now if only she could play guitar...

Retro Man | 22 August 2008 - 3:17pm

that's the one

;-)

Jim Thomas | 22 August 2008 - 5:10pm

Jenny Agutter in Walkabout

swoooooooooooooooooon.

that kate mossman's not bad either.

Crowdedmouse | 22 August 2008 - 3:10pm

Jenny!

Double swoon. To say nothing of "Daddy, It's my Daddy".

Carl Parker | 22 August 2008 - 11:11pm

Fairest Kate

How old is "too old" to have a crush on Kate?

Cornwall Guy | 29 August 2008 - 3:23pm

Janet Ellis....

In Jigsaw guise - Got a bit mumsy, though still edgy, on Blue Peter.

John Waite | 22 August 2008 - 3:12pm

Where's eddie g?

all this talk of birds and totty. I'll keep a lookout. He'll be along in a minute.

Paul Waring | 22 August 2008 - 3:15pm

You beat me to it

I was waiting for the stern voice of Eddie to remind us that the two sexes should never look at each other in an admiring way. Much.

Totally gratuitous picture of the Cheeky Girls WTF

Cheeky

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 3:29pm

You need to wash out your dirty mind

Go look at a photograph of Lemsip Optic or Lembik Opik or whoever as a punishment.

How about a *clean* photo of the lovely Katy Manning. I would not be so rude as to post THAT photo with a Dalek...

Beany | 22 August 2008 - 8:07pm

Good lord!

A Google image search reveals several versions of 'THAT photo'. I had no idea.

Gatz | 23 August 2008 - 8:44pm

Hell's teeth!

That must have been chilly.

Graham Johns | 23 August 2008 - 11:26pm

Better Than Billie Piper

The lovely Miss Grant, you beat me to it. So you have the Dalek picture do you?

David Wright | 26 August 2008 - 11:58am

(Sighs longingly) Phoebe Cates from Gremlins...

... and I have no idea how to post pictures I'm afraid. But she was lovely...(sighs longingly again)

ganglesprocket | 22 August 2008 - 3:44pm

Magpie - two for joy!

Surely I can't have been the only lad to have watched 'Magpie' because of the lovely presenter Susan Stranks. It may have been ITV's streetwise answer to Blue Peter and Pete Brady may have worn wall-to-wall flares (and showed you how to make some yourself with leftover curtain material) but it was the delicious Susan who drew in the punters really.

Richard Raftery | 22 August 2008 - 4:17pm

Oh yes

...that moment when she held up the origami model in front of her tee shirt ......one for the Dads more like.

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 4:59pm

Gentlemen prefer blonds

Oh no Jenny Hanley did it for me...

Uncle Mick | 22 August 2008 - 11:11pm

Back in the day...

...these floated my boat:

Joanna Lumley,
Farrah Fawcett Majors,
Morgan Fairchild,
Cheri Lunghi,
Heather Locklear.

Christ, I was Rod Stewart!

Never had them up on my wall though. The family would have given me an awful time (I was the youngest!!).

Nicodemus | 22 August 2008 - 4:43pm

Totty. Crumpet. Bird. Chick. 'Love'.

Gosh, feeling slightly honoured to be invited to participate in this droolsome and testosterone-fuelled googling. So, twanging the straps of my ethical Chilean dungarees ( and twiddling my NHS Granny glasses ) may I say that- after much deliberation- the votes from G Towers go to the husky-voiced temptress that was Fenella Fielding in 'Carry On Screaming'.

eddie g | 22 August 2008 - 4:47pm

Good sport

...Eddie

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 5:36pm

Nice Guy

...Eddie.

That made me smile that did.

Paul Waring | 22 August 2008 - 5:42pm

Yes and

....FF is a right babe

(**pushes luck and legs it**)

Twangothan | 22 August 2008 - 6:13pm

Lovely ladies...

Kate Bush

Connie Booth

Victoria Principal

Olivia Newton John

Patrick Crowther | 22 August 2008 - 6:13pm

The Indie girls that did it for me:

Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays

Juliana Hatfield

Julianne Reagan from All About Eve

Double Deckers..

Gillian Bailey who played Billie, Yum yum

Uncle Mick | 22 August 2008 - 11:10pm

The Cuckoo Waltz

I used to tune into this so-so seventies comedy just to see Diane Keene. She was gorgeous! Now she is in 'Doctors' and still having amorous adventures. To quote Morrissey 'Fifteen minutes with you.....'

Richard Raftery | 23 August 2008 - 12:33am

The Sweeney movie

DK fans were of course wide eyed when she disrobed for her appearance in the 1st Seeney movie.

Carl Parker | 26 August 2008 - 6:05pm

Fifteen minutes eh?

The 'Heaven and Back' Express.

eddie g | 23 August 2008 - 9:19am

Or even two minutes

As the Flights say, two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven.

peterafifer | 26 August 2008 - 11:53am

C'mon ladies

We know you had pictures of David Hasselhof...

Beany | 23 August 2008 - 9:22am

The ladies respond

OK then. Let's start with

James Hunt
David Soul ("don't give up on us baby" was played to death in our house)
Leif Garrett - although having just seen what he looks like now I can confirm that the years have not been kind to either of us.

I then moved away from 'blonde bombshells' to:

John Taylor (obvious I know but still....)
Dave Gahan.

Is anyone else disturbed by the fact that Jay Raynor now looks like an early 90's Gahan?

Bishy Barnabee | 23 August 2008 - 2:49pm

Another lady responds

Adam Ant - especially in the video for Stand and Deliver when he looks right into the camera...
Midge Ure - actually, still have a soft spot there, I'm a sucker for a Scottish accent and he seems like a nice guy
Jon Moss from Culture Club - then I found out about the Boy George stuff...
I guess Barry Grant was the ladies' equivalent of Karen Grant in Brookside

Janice | 26 August 2008 - 4:36pm

There was one and only ever one true . . .

Kate Nelligan in a flimsy shift in a BBC Zolafest.

Archie Valparaiso | 23 August 2008 - 9:48am

I'd completely forgotten

She starred in Therese Raquin.

Carl Parker | 23 August 2008 - 1:52pm

Kate Nelligan

Didn't she leave the country? Wasn't one of you lot stalking her, was it?

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 11:58am

Kate Nelligan

Didn't she leave the country? Wasn't one of you lot stalking her, was it?

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 11:59am

She's gone?

That probably explains why she has been absent from our screens all these years.

Carl Parker | 5 September 2008 - 12:37pm

Jane Fonda

in Barbarella - phwoaar !

Roy Levy | 23 August 2008 - 10:23am

Still fiddling with my Chilean strides but

hey...lest not we forget Anita Pallenberg in that movie too.

eddie g | 23 August 2008 - 10:26am

Yes!

Kate Nelligan! She took over from Helen Mirren, who had ousted Luan Peters, who had succeeded Susan Stranks, who had pushed aside Kathy Kirby.
Kate evenually got the push from Sally James, who quickly lost out to Linda Bellingham, whose position was usurped by Clare Grogan until Selina Scott appeared. Then Michaela Strachan came knocking. Then I got married, at which point - as any married man will know - your wife's sister and/or best friend takes over.

Graham Johns | 23 August 2008 - 3:12pm

Between your Kathy Kirby and Susan Stranks

didn't Diana Rigg muscle her jumpsuited - if non-alliterative - way in, or was she mine all mine after all?

Archie Valparaiso | 23 August 2008 - 5:10pm

Even then

I knew to avoid women skilled in the martial arts.

Graham Johns | 23 August 2008 - 11:07pm

For me

It was Hammer type horror seen in double bill Saturday nights on BBC2 during the summer - you got the old b&w followed by the lurid all colour 60s or 70s feature - often featuring fanged up lovelies with heaving bosoms.

Then there was Pan's People, of course, not to mention Hot Gossip in the eighties. Plus 2 names I recall - Susan Penhaligan, who featured in BBC's Dracula and Sally Thomsett (another ex-Railway Children as it happens) who was in Robin's Nest.

These days Dr Alice Roberts (Coast)is very appealing - what a brain.

Sven | 23 August 2008 - 5:35pm

Alice

Have you noticed how the Coast cameramen are always finding reasons to walk behind her? They never do it with Neil, he of the inappropriate hair.

Graham Johns | 23 August 2008 - 11:29pm

Old Holborn

I bet she smokes Old Holborn. All the girls I knew with pink hair did, back in the day.

Twangothan | 24 August 2008 - 4:20pm

Or even Two Minutes

As the Flights say, two minutes in heaven is better than one minute in heaven.

peterafifer | 26 August 2008 - 11:50am

The real title of this thread should be...

"What Did You Do In The Phwoar, Daddy?"

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 12:00pm

or I wonder would the Beeb commission a show

where gentlemen of a certain age reminisce, with dewy eyes, about lasses off the telly back in the day.

"Who do you think you Phwoar?"

ivan | 26 August 2008 - 12:04pm

Misty water-coloured memories...

...of the way we phwoar.

I think we're on a roll.

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 12:21pm

well quite...

beats the hell out of my original idea for the name of the show "Dirty old men"...

ivan | 26 August 2008 - 3:34pm

File

on Phwoar

Roy Levy | 29 August 2008 - 6:59am

"Oh Dad....

do we have to listen to your old phwoar stories again?"

Patrick Crowther | 29 August 2008 - 8:01am

"Oh Dad....

do we have to listen to your old phwoar stories again?"

Patrick Crowther | 29 August 2008 - 8:01am

All's fair...

...in love and phwoar.

Phwoar! What is is good for? Absolutely everything.

Lucas Hare | 26 August 2008 - 12:41pm

Gorgeous female drummer shock!

I was watching the generally crap parade of gormelss and ugly kids "Indie" bands in the Reading Festival BBC3 TV coverage and caught sight of a rather charming redhead playing drums with Lightspeed Champion!

I have no idea who she is, can't find any photos to post as it's more of a solo project than a real band thing, but she was great (at drumming and singing too!).

Retro Man | 26 August 2008 - 2:27pm

Springer Bell | 12 September 2008 - 9:17am

Sharron Davis

Have you forgotten her heart-stopping white tops that she wore poolside at the Athens Olympics? The cameramen were always shooting her from the waist up..such toned arms...long fingernails...
They only shot her from the shoulder up in 2008!

Grant | 12 September 2008 - 10:08pm

A lifetime of dreams.........

First stirrings: Joan Greenwood (Kind Hearts...)
Teenage Passion: Felicity Kendall (I so wanted to be Richard Briars)

Kylie (She's 40 now, so it's OK)
Current crush: Mylene Klass/Mariella Frostrup in a TV ad. Inspired!
