It's a warm but pleasant night in Charleston SC, we're in an Italian bar & restaurant. The girl at the door apologises because there's no booths available and would y'all like to sit at the bar? We accept.
In the corner there's drums, a double bass and a keyboard, the Lady of the House has ordered a Margarita and I've got a long cold beer.
The band take their place and this young girl steps up to the mike and sings Stormy Weather to perfection.
Incredibly it was open mike night and this girl, no more then 18, had walked off the street to sing it.
For the next two hours we were treated to jazz of the highest level by people who only turned up because they love it and love playing/singing it!
In all the night cost me $70 in drinks, best value I've had for years.

By Jove.......

Charleston SC brings back some memories.

Lived there for a few months in the late eighties as a travelling student.

Worked in a posh restaurant called Ferante's as a token Limey bus boy (didn't know what I was doing but acted posh and got some meaty tips for a 20 year old). Quick check on Google maps shows that it's still there with the same name !

Seem to remember leaving just before Hurricane Hugo hit it right on the nose.

Took me ages to work out...

...that "SC" must be South Carolina. You yanks (or confederates) and your abreviations! :-)

Sounds like a winning night, Gordon. I was told once by a friend who lives near Clonakilty, a little village in County Cork, Ireland, that something amazing happened in a pub there a few years ago. Noel Redding, ex of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, lived in the village and every Friday night he had a covers/Irish music gig in the local pub. Mitch Mitchell, ex drummer of the Jimi H Experience, was visiting him one weekend and sat in on drums. This stranger walks in, with an electric guitar - a tourist - and asks can he sit in. They spend the rest of the night playing blistering versions of Jimi Hendrix material. Stranger says 'thanks, lads' at the end of the night and breezes off. Probably thinking that Noel & Mitch are there every week reliving their youth. amazing...
