Phil X - big kid in a guitar shop

Vince Black's picture

Does any one else in the Massive watch these videos? If you have a spare 10 minutes and are in need of cheering up, Phil X is your man. Fretted Americana have been running these videos for a while but recently they've become less about the guitar and more about Phil X. He's hysterical to watch, an absolute riff monster and a 100% rock'n'roll dude who never takes himself too seriously

What's interesting about these is that he's actually demonstrating vintage guitars, each one for sale at serious money. But you'd have to go to the Fretted Americana shop website to see the price. The YouTube vids never show the price and are aimed at an audience who could never possibly afford the guitars in question

Whether you're interested in vintage guitars or not, its great entertainment value just watching Phil wig out or funk it up on this week's model and bawl and screech in tune over the top. He always starts out with a Vox AC30 but wastes little time in switching to the Tonemaster and adding a little "bad monkey", whatever that is

Here's a couple of good examples. The latest video featuring the black Gretsch Country Gennulman has a little swing, followed by classic riffs from Mountain, Guess Who, AC/DC and I particularly enjoy the recent vid featuring the 1965 Epiphone Wilshire where he gives it some serious Black Sabbath

Excellent stuff.

And, point of information, the Digitech Bad Monkey is an excellent and cheap distortion pedal.
