Perfect Music for Christmas Dinner...

Andrew2's picture

Here it will be Sufjan Stevens Christmas Songs album - only downloaded this morning and the whole family (teenagers and Mom and Dad)are loving it as dinner is prepared. The usual Sufjan take on traditional and new songs - just seems to work. Tried moving to a Christmas mix with the Spector album and anything "Christmassy" thrown in - and I just got the call of - keep it on Sufjan!
So whats playing/played for the rest of the Massive?

While I'm cooking,

I traditionally listen to the seven Beatles christmas records back to back, but in reverse order. Much happier end that way.

We ended up with 5 Live burbling in the background..

No music, though. Not sure what I'd have chosen.

a mix of things

Stravinsky - Firebird Suite and some opera arias while cooking, more opera when eating, then The Fleshtones - Stocking Stuffer while clearing up.

We had

Richard Hawley's albums playing back-to-back throughout dinner. It worked pretty well.

John Martyn Compilation

Suitably laid back after various Celtic concoctions proved too enervating.

Beth Orton

Pass in Time collection is good.

Although things like the Hed Kandi Chill and Beach House compilations are good too. Providing a kind of ambient bubbling pulse but unobtrusively.

Another plug for Thea Gilmore

I've already praised this record, but frankly it deserves more promotion than I could ever give it: Strange Communion by Thea Gilmore is just exquisite. A collection of pretty obscure Christmas and winter themed songs (I got it from emusic and don't know which are originals), I've been flogging it pretty heavily and I like it more each time. I can't think of a yuletide record I like more right now. She has a beautiful voice and is a great artist.
