Peppermint Radio

Uncle Monty's picture

A late entry for my favourite album of 2010, I've only just discovered Kate Walsh's Peppermint Radio on Spotify (http://open.spotify.com/album/4WvTgA1gCqyr7RLnYIMNhc)

It's an album of covers which would normally send me running for the hills, but this sounds as though it's driven by something more than contractual obligation or a dearth of ideas. It sounds very much as though this is a highly personal project. The songs covered are unusual choices in that almost all are tracks that seem so inextricably linked to the original artists that they could never work in another context (e.g. EMF's Unbelievable, The Shamen's Move Any Mountain); some also seem impossibly distant from Walsh's low-key approach. Crucially, in my opinion at least, they all work perfectly.

Here's a taster:

Thanks for letting me know about this.

Just spent half an hour listening to it and its genuinely lovely. Beetlebum - already a great song - sounds maybe even better. Well done Kate and well done Uncle Monty!

Did I say thank you?

That was lovely. Subterranean Homesick Alien and A Little Respect are superb.

Like a non-cheesy

Richard Cheese. I do like covers in a different genre eg Nouvelle vague, Senor Coconut etc.

This one is class though.

Excellent

Thanks for the tip - I've just listened to Thea Gilmore 'Strange Communion' and now 'Peppermint Radio'.

it's all going very nicely with a foot of snow and -3C outside.

Anybody got any suggestions of what to listen to next? Don't kill the mood!

Kate Walsh

is the sort of artist I've dismissed as 'not my thing.' (Under 35, no beard, you know the drill...)
But this is a very impressive record. Thanks for that UM.
