PEARL JAM

spinoza013's picture

After 18 years waiting to see one of their own shows ( saw them Headline Leeds 2 years ago ) I was like a crazed young rocker again. Absolutely gobsmacking show.

Am I alone amongst the massive who feel they are the most genuine and rewarding band in American musical history?

"most genuine and rewarding band in American musical history"

Err...I suspect you are.

Glad you enjoyed it though.

What's yours?

Close second are REM.

I'd like to qualify my statement with consideration of their longevity and consistency.

I can't think of many other bands that have maintained such a high degree of satisfaction.

19 years is a long time for a band to maintain credibility and passion.

Where to start?

All depends on your definition of 'genuine and rewarding' I suppose.

But off the top of my head:

Little Feat
REM
Steely Dan
Talking Heads
Crazy Horse
Bruce/E Street Band
Southside Johnny & the Asbury Dukes
The Stooges
Booker T & the MGs

...and I could go on.

I do own two Pearl Jam albums - Vitalogy and Yield. I'd struggle to hum (or even name) a song on either.

But you've encouraged me to go back and find out what I've missed!

The name.

I always thought it was about musicians, jam sessions and the like.

Think of jam.

Now think of it being made with pearls.

Go "Uuuurgghh".

Mind you, the name didn't harm Thelonius Monk's career, did it?

Monk/Spunk?

Tell me I've got that wrong!

That voice

I can't stand Eddie Vedder's voice. It's probably in my Top Ten Rock Voices That Make Me Want To Run Far, Run Fast. And I can't get past that. So I'll never know if they are really as great as you say.

Re: Pearl Jam

If you don't know the name Katey Sagal, you probably know her work. Katey Sagal got her start in the 70s on television and as a backup singer for people like Bob Dylan, Tanya Tucker, and Bette Midler, and in the 80s, landed her most famous role, as Peg Bundy on Married with Children. Later, she landed a voice role on Matt Groenig's futuristic animated sit-com Futurama, which has a sixth season in development hell. Lately, she has a central role in Sons of Anarchy, an FX network crime drama about an outlaw motorcycle gang that her character's deceased husband founded. (Sagal's actual husband created the show.) Katey Sagal has had quite the career, and won't need cash advances again.

Not my cup of tea at all....

But I couldn't/can't stand Nirvana either

I prefer my USA/agit rockers with a bit more funk and passion...
