Paul Newman dies at eighty-three

You knew he could act, you knew he was the most handsome actor that ever lived but bet you didn't know he invented alt country as well.

Sad news on a such a lovely day.

That's a great clip David from a great film. Thanks for posting as it's one that isn't going to pop up on any tributes on TV this evening. He really was one of the very best.

"If I'm dead, kill him"

They probably won't show this gem either.

Thanks

for the Cool Hand Luke clip, David. That song is what has been playing in my head ever since I heard about an hour ago. I love so many of Newman's films and performances. This is very sad.

Sad news indeed...

a fine actor and by all accounts a fine human being too. And ludicrously handsome to boot.

Some guys have all the luck!

God bless him

Cool hand Luke is one of my all time favourite films in fact only yesterday I ordered it from Love film. He seemed such a nice guy too and it is often overlooked how much he did for people less fortunate than himself.

loved his

dressings

Guns N Roses weren't all bad

as their use of Strother Martin's 'What we got here is...failure to communicate' speech on the track 'Civil War' made me seek out the film as a fifteen year old and I became obsessed with it. and not just for the car cleaning scene, mind.

That band may have quickly faded from my life but Paul Newman's performance has stayed with me and George Kennedy's final words in the film seemed to strike a chord with me today when thought about Mr Newman

'He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker.'

I loved pretty much everything he ever did.

One of the true giants, he's irreplaceable.

Nobody's Fool

Has anyone seen this movie? I think it it's one of his finest performances.

Crowdedmouse | 28 September 2008 - 8:51am

Curiously...

I have always loved this clip from Judge Roy Bean

A truly great actor

and proof that if you genuinely do want to stay out of the gossip columns you can.

Scott Wilkinson | 29 September 2008 - 1:02am

Old school

Michael Parkinson said something to the effect that Newman was the bridge between two generations of Hollywood: Marlon Brando at one end, Tom Cruise at the other. It's easy to forget that he was a contemporary of James Dean - who died 53 years ago tomorrow - but this clip is worth a look.

And this

I was bowled over by PN in this movie - and this scene left me stunned....

It's easy to forget what a great actor he was as he was so handsome. But what a voice - and what timing. He even stands up with consumate craft.
