Paul McCartney - Straddling the entertainment centuries

DrJ's picture

Paul McCartney was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last weekend and he took part in the comedy too. Here are two sketches, 47 years apart, with Macca.

What a guy!

(NB SNL are pretty strict about their stuff being on YouTube, so apologies if the second link disappears)

That....

...is a very good way to kick off a misty Monday morning. Brilliant! Thanks, Doc. Oh, and btw, look at his little face at the end of the "tiny harmonica solo":

Bless him. What a guy indeed.

Macca

He's obviously "doing the rounds" at the moment.

That Morecambe and Wise

sketch reminds me how impoverished we are today for light entertainment based on the simple idea of bringing talent together so as to be funny for anyone watching and not just a particular demographic of viewers.

Thanks for that, Doc...

I remember hearing that comment 'last time I saw a growth like that' as a putdown of a speaker at a debate when I was in first year in Limerick University and thought the speaker hi-fucking-larious for coming up with such a devastating line.

Said utterer of line has had this link posted to him, asking if he ALSO remembers claiming he made it up himself!

Limerick, you say...

Have you seen The Rubberbandits..?

(There might be a little effing and jeffing in this, NSFW-fans, I can't remember)

ONE MILLION HITS

their song "Horse Outside" has now on youtube. It was mentioned in the mailout and I clicked to see what the hell it was like.

Sweet Jesus of Nazareth, it's all kicking off now and I'll be most surprised if it's not Christmas Number 1 here.

Saturday Night Live...

SNL - oh dear

I believe that the reason that SNL is so reluctant to have its stuff on Youtube is that 97% of it is, and always has been, woefully unfunny.
Even in the 'glory' years of Belushi, Aykroyd, etc, most sketches were simply vaguely amusing concepts/characters stretched way beyond breaking point into long, tedious sketches.

Always got a soft spot for thre Barry Gibb Talk Show, though.

The Ongoing Argument

Hasn't the "SNL isn't as good as it used to be" argument been running since their second episode? I don't watch SNL because it's rarely on in the UK, but I'll occasionally watch the sketches on the NBC website. It's hit & miss. Whenever I've been away and watched it in real time, so to speak, it's uneven and has the appearance of being thrown together.

Then I picked up the complete series boxsets from the "classic years" of 75-79 and the shows are uneven and have the appearance of being thrown together. So, plus ca change. (Some of the musical performances though are fantastic)

However SNL remains a very appealing concept and there's something appealing about watching the execution of live tv at that level. Plus when it's good, it's very good indeed.

The Sketches

I saw SNl last night for the first time in years and they have the same problem that they have always had. The sketches are far too long.

The one I saw last night was President Obama giving a speech. Unknown to him, the "gatecrasher" couple appear behind him, wave, take pictures, etc. The first two minutes were very funny as they silently deal with the Security people while the President carries on with his speech. However, just when it should end, it carries on and on and on.

Jay Leno's sketches are the same - they don't know when to sto
