Patty Griffin's gospel album

Carl Parker's picture

I know there's a few other Patty Griffin fans out there among the Massive besides myself.

She has just recorded a gospel album titled "Downtown Church" and there is a stream of the album available here:

I'm not a religious man, so don't buy into the Christianity, but it does sound rather good.

It will be available until January 26th.

If you like that

then you may like Beth Nielsen Chapman's Prism album. Like you I don't really buy the religion but there are some wonderful songs and thoughts on the album.

Hmmm

I adore PG and have all her albums....but the religion thing puts me off. I have tremendous affection for Buddy Miller but couldn't get on with his gospel album either.

Thanks for the tip

I had been looking at this and Patty Griffin in general as I have some of her colloborations with others but no solo stuff yet I like most of the other artists who are usually mentioned in the same breath. Any idea where I should start?

Patty's best albums

I think that Impossible Dream is Patty's best (it features Top Of the World which the Dixie Chicks notably covered).
After that I'd say 1,000 Kisses and then Children Running Through.
You might be able to find a torrent of Silver Bell which is her lost, unreleased album (it should have preceded 1,000 Kisses) and is pretty good too.
There's also the live album A Kiss In Time which I've not heard, but the selection looks pretty good.

Kiss in time

...is excellent, but so, to be honest, is her debut, "Living with ghosts" which is solo with acoustic guitar. My first was "Flaming red" which is atypical in that it is a big loud rock album where all the others are semi acoustic and intimate, but I love 'em all. I agree completely with Carl but you could do worse than the live album if you want a good cross section of her best songs.
