Paranoid (about) Android
Posted by Reno Dakota on 23 October 2009 - 12:35pm.
My mobile phone contract is due to finish next month, and I’m pondering my options. I’d dearly love an iPhone, but with my tendencies, I’d want the 32Gb 3Gs version.
However I’ve seen a G2 Touch, and this has Android, and the monthly price is pretty much what I’m paying now.
In essence, it all comes down to the apps available, and I wondered if I could read your views on what the android marketplace has that the appStore doesn’t? (and vice versa)
Thank you all kindly

Last Man On Earth?
I'd love to help but apart from the first sentence, I haven't got a clue what you're talking about!
That's the problem with technology.
I look after the office computers on the basis that "In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is King".
likewise
what the hell is Android
(other than Ian Holm in Alien and Mr Data off Star Trek...)
Currently...
Apple apps are written for one phone - with a known screen size/resolution and hardware spec; Android apps have to work on many phones, potentially with differing screen sizes, screen resolutions, control mechanisms etc.
The Apple App Store has 27.5 million apps, the Android store has 3.
Will Android still be around in 12 months? Who knows.
My advice would be go with the Apple - but then that's always my advice :-)
Fact-check
By "3" Android apps, do you actually mean 10,000+?
And by "27.5 million" iPhone apps, do you mean approximately 90,000?
Aren't a lot of apps stats bulked out
with desktops and graphics for your phone that and pointless ringtones. Number of genuinely useful for any phone is in the low 100's if not lower. In my experience of nokia apps apart from those already on the phone like nokia and Google maps and the sat nav, the only ones I use regularly use are last fm, twitter, the guardian minisite and flickr.
Aren't the rest 2 minute pub conversation topics?
Been pondering the same question
Would love to have an iPhone but paying over £500 for a PAYG otion seems really steep (I'm already blessed with a company Blackberry so a phone with airtime is pointless). I'm wondering
* how may apps are really useful in the long term?
* how good is the internet connectivity in more rural locations?
* so many places now want cash for wi-fi - hotels, airports etc - does it end up expensive?
* with O2's exclusive deal coming to an end soon, is there any hope of some price reductions post Xmas?
* I've not really looked at other smartphones - is that a bit short-sighted?
Be interested in your views.
I've just bought..
A Nokia 5800 and am mightily impressed - there are more apps available than anyone would ever need, and as Chris G. points out, vast swathes of apps are either useless, pointless or not worth the cash outlay.
My admittedly limited research into the iPhone returned the feeling that it's just not worth the extra wonga.
I have an HTC Magic
I have an Android phone and it is entirely wonderful.
The app market is terrific. My personal favourites:
Beebplayer (basically iplayer on your phone)
BBC listings (does what it says on the tin)
Backgammon
Bubble (spirit level - very handy)
Astrid (to do lists an task manager)
CardioTrainer (uses GPS to let me know exactly how far I've gone on my walks and how long it's taken)
DailyStrip (all sorts of cartoons)
FlashLight (turns your phone into a torch)
Funny Touch Screen (keeps the toddler amused)
Google Sky Map (amazing. point it at the sky and it shows you the constellations above)
ITweet! (nice twitter app)
London Tube Status (live departure boards and line updates for your local tube station)
Musical Lite (metronome)
News Rob (google reader)
Notepad (you can guess what it is)
OI Countdown (a countdown timer)
OI Shopping List (incredibly useful for jotting down things I need to buy or do while out)
OpenSudoko (I love puzzles, me)
Robotic Guitarist (turns your phone into a strummable guitar)
Shazam (it's Shazam, what more can I tell you?)
Where's My Droid? (lost your phone? want to dial it to find out where it is... but you've left it on silent? this application turns on your phone ringer for you and rings when you text a codeword).
I loooooooooooooove my android phone. Love love love. Highly recommended.
Thank you, Hannah
Much appreciated and a real help. :-)
