Over-rated

paintyface's picture

Does anybody else out there think that the Beach Boys are a vastly over-rated band. I bought Pet Sounds recently after reading that it's a masterpiece. I thought it was rubbish bar a couple of songs. why are they lauded as rivals to the Beatles?
Is this just me or does anyone else feel the same.

I prefer

to them the Arctic Monkeys, if that helps at all.

I disagree

What am I missing here? I have Pet Sounds but what else is there?

There's lots more

The Beach Boys are one of my favourite bands but I'm not keen on Pet Sounds. Wouldn't It Be Nice, I like but I think God Only Knows is a bit dull especially when you compare it to the pure pop of just about everything that came before. Wasn't there a recent thread on the merits of The Beach Boys and where to start?

Rubbish?

You have ears of cloth, Sir.

Try downloading Cabinessence from your favourite dubious site.

Spoken like someone who's

Spoken like someone who's never owned a copy of Wild Honey or the Ten Years of Harmony best of the 70's Beach Boys 2 lp.

I dislike the band.

I have a 3CD Best Of and Pet Sounds. I am never happy when they come up on shuffle (all rated 1 star so a real rarity). I've just decided to delete all of Pet Sounds and cut the Best Of down to about 40 minutes. I'm not saying the music is bad, just that I personally, in my very own opinion, get nothing out of them. For some reason they do not click with me.

I think they're a singles band

They did some cracking stuff not from Pet Sounds: In My Room, California Girls, Good Vibrations etc.

What puts me in a quandry is that the singles from Pet Sounds are pretty much peerless and God Only Knows is officially my favourite song ever written... but I don't like the album.

Personally, I understand why Brian Wilson is called a visionary and a genius, but I also think they're over-rated. Very inconsistent if you ask me (which, indirectly, you did) and not great over the course of a whole album.

Forget Pet (for the time being)

I think you should start somewhere completely different - namely Holland

Once you've been there - try Surf's Up and then Carl and the Passions - So Tough.

It's all on Spotify

When they were good...

they were very good: Good Vibrations, Wouldn't It Be Nice and my personal fave Heroes and Villains, to name but three utterly life-affirming songs.

But there is a lot of 'filler' mixed in there too. Even on The Very Best of The Beach Boys, only about half the songs are truly essential. They're the ones that made it to my iPod anyhow.

'Til I Die

Listen to "Til I Die", ideally on headphones.
