I have never heard of 'Calvin Harris'

I don't know whether that refutes your suggestion or means I should get out more (or less).I shall Google him to see what I've been missing.

"I'm Not Alone" is a good track

and Calvin Harris' brother is a very good jazz pianist. He's a good friend of mine. (That's Ed, not Adam Wiles)

Ooh no

I went to that there Cadiz festival a couple of February's ago, fireworks, beer, folk dressed up, pouring rain, beer, fried fish, and a distinct lack of memory of what happened the next day. Similar experience in Gijon (Asturias) and San Sebastien but with better weather.

In other news I notice the Beatles are on the cover of the Radio Times

Cant fault Hep's selections, especially Stephen Fry. Rather like David Mitchell, the man needs to learn the word no. Perhaps for the next series of Fry's English Delight he can do that...

0
ganglesprocket | 25 August 2009 - 9:53am

X Factor wins it for me

I'm not on the fence about X-factor; I loathe it, and loathe the way it's actually impossible to get through life without reading, hearing or seeing something about it, its ghastly judges and simpering mentors, the in-no-way manufactured spats between the said ghastly judges, Susan Bloody Boyle old uncle Tom Cobbley an' all.

Top gear makes it into my personal Room 101, though I gather it's just come to an end, so as long as I avoid Dave TV, where those three twats will be on permanent heavy rotation, I need fear that not longer.

David Mitchell, someone mentioned. Yes, he is overexposed, but at least he almost always provides what Jimmy Young used to call VFM. Same with Stephen Fry, for the most part.

One confession: I've never heard of Dominic Littlewood. Who is he?

0
lisbon | 25 August 2009 - 11:26am

some agreement

  1. Katona - check. Lovely, why don't you go and talk to Francis Rossi about your bloody septum falling out? Just don't splash it all over the bloody comics please, because I suspect no one with any spare brain cells has the slightest frigging interest.
  2. Katona/Fritzl jokes - Yes, that means you Frankie Boyle. As m much as I like you, stop. They're just not that funny anymore
  3. Cheryl Cole - check. The girl you'd take home to your mum, unless your mum was a cloakroom attendant
  4. Cowell - the trousers aren't high enough: somewhere over his smug, self-satisfied head would be perfect. I can see that I won't be watching ITV anymore this year.
  5. Piers Morgan - no words to describe how odious he really is. No, not even that word is sufficient.
  6. Katie Price/Jordan - ditto
  7. Soaps - no thanks, I have a life, however pathetic it might be. Watching soaps takes away minutes I'll never, ever get back
  8. Horne and Corden - thankfully not for long though, after that car crash of a series and Lesbian Vampire...zzzz. Corden almost escapes censure because of The History Boys, but not quite.
  9. Football - as much as I love it,you can have to much of a good thing. See the aforementioned David Mitchell's spoof Sky football trailer for reference.
  10. Rob Brydon - as much of a treasure as Mitchell, but becoming nearly as ubiquitous. I will, however, forgive him on this occasion because of his chairing of ISIHAC.
0
illuminatus | 25 August 2009 - 11:56am

Yep Mitchell

is a treasure but please, we know who you think you are, whether you'd lie to us, what it'd be like living in Devon with some nutty WI women, how far a numberwang can be stretched, that you've got news for us and that you like to mock the week in your newspaper column

Still, next series of Peep Show soon! Yay!

Goes w\o saying th The flipping W*re - sick of journos relating it to everything that happens. Today tied into a piece of 'Broken Britain' on R5 - yes our streets are like Baltimore's (and not John Water's version of the city). Yes we know you've got all the box sets, yes its completely gripping but also incomprehensible.

And in particualr this conversation -

"Oh you're only half way through Season 3 - well at the end...."
"oooh don't tell me, no spoilerz, no spoilerz"

No i don't want to borrow your season 1 box set, yes i know its a slow burner and yes, I know that bloke is actually British. Stop acting like Jehovah's bloody Witnesses with this stuff.

Oh and sport. It's all pish

It's not who you see it's what you see

Stephen Fry
Top Gear
Katie Price and Peter Andre
Freddie Flintoff
Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet of Crisps
Gavin & Stacey
Friends
The voice of Edith Bowman

It's odd we all see different people as over exposed. I know it's stating the obvious but it does depend on what media you consume. Top Gear, Gavin & Stacey & TPOFAAPOC are just TV shows in the schedules that I either watch or don't. They don't seem to spill out into other areas (apart maybe for James Corden but he seems to have gone quiet lately.) Friends isn't over exposed it's on all the time! I can handle seeing KP & PA on an advert for a Sunday paper once a week and I guess you have to be a cricket person to see a lot of Freddie Flintoff, I've heard his name on the radio recently but I'm not actually sure I can remember what he looks like. I don't think Stephen Fry is over exposed, I think the problem he is having is that he is starting to believe his own hype in that everything he has to say about anything is worthwhile... it's not, which makes his appearances outside formatted shows quite irritating.
I agree that David Mitchell seems to be on television a disproportionate ammount of time at the moment but that probably reflects what I watch as well.
Other people have mentioned X Factor but I couldn't actually tell you who presents the show (apart from Simon Cowell) as I simply don't see that sort of information.

People complain ...

... that John Barrowman is on tv a lot: he's never been in anything I've been watching.

He's never on Look North or Law & Order repeats.

0

The Premier League

It fills 16 page pullouts in the papers twice a week, dominates the back pages the rest of the time & is the lifeblood of 5Live, Talk Sport, Sky and ESPN. And in the main it's Wigan v Fulham and it's rubbish.

0
Graham Johns | 25 August 2009 - 3:01pm

Given the number of recent radio and TV apperances, I'd say...

Mark Ellen (the next Today presenter?)
Eamonn Forde (digital media tart)
David Hepworth ('go to' man for quality music items)

Come on chaps, stop buggering about on the telly and wireless! Get the next issue of the Word out a few days earlier.

I know people go on about the Wire here

but in general most people don't know about it even with the silly season ho ha today the radio bloke was having to explain what it was to a general audience. Amongst my friends not many people have seen it.
The funny thing about Sienna Miller (for all her publicity) is I can never hold what she looks like in my mind. I know she's blonde but she's got a bland blonde face and I swear I can't keep remember what she's like. Also has anyone here actually seen anything she's been in?

0
Chris G | 25 August 2009 - 5:22pm

Re : The Miller bint

I was thinking the very same thing as I typed her name, although she's all over the media, I doubt I could identify her from a photo.
Most of the floosies in the spotlight at the moment - Pixie Lott, Geldof's spawn, Katy Perry et al. tend to be pretty bland in my opinion. At least Ms Winehouse is erm... different.

Rob Fitzpatrick

Rob Fitzpatrick's article a few months ago was a truly great piece about people we hear loads about but know nothing of really. If he has any wit, it could become a fantastic zeitgeisty book. Apologies for the word zeitgeisty.
