Out of the ashes - great bands from great bands

Retro Man's picture

I was trying to think of cases where one great band finishes and another one that is their equal, or better, springs up.
The rule is, it must be more than one original band member, not just the singer going solo - can you think of any?

I've got two to start:

Union Carbide Productions...

morphed into The Soundtrack of Our Lives

Next up

The Undertones...

became That Petrol Emotion...

Joy Division & New Order...

Personally I don't think either group is particularly great, but I seem to be in the minority, so...

It's a growing

Minority

Sub-Sub

became Doves without losing a single member, but definitely qualify because they changed identity after their studio burnt down, so were - *ahem* - literally 'from the ashes'.

Not great but

then these things are so subjective...

Half of the original Human League became Heaven 17

Most of the original Adam & the Ants became Bow Wow Wow

We won't mention Sweet and the Wandering Crutchlees. Even I can't stretch the definition of 'great' that far.

Carmel

became Amy Winehouse

0
Giuffre | 13 January 2009 - 1:49am

and Amy Winehouse became...

Nico.

0
Patrick Crowther | 13 January 2009 - 10:45am

Surely not!

Carmel became Duffy didn't she?

Come back Carmel, she was great!

Mid period Waterboys:

Karl Wallinger left and became World Party, Anthony Thistlewaite stayed and produced a couple of thoroughly decent solo LPs (mainly about tractors)and the Waterboys kept on kept on going.
Fairport begat Steeleye Span and Richard and Linda Thompson and Matthews Southern Comfort and Fotheringay. Steeleye Span begat Gay and Terry Woods and the Etchingham Steam Band, the Albion Country Band, the Albion Dance Band and the Albion Band. (Am I stretching "great" too far here? I don't think so!)

Folk Rock doesn't count I'm afraid...

a genre of music in which inbreeding is permissible and encouraged!

The Las -> Cast

Well I thought they were just as good.

Also At The Drive In became two bands that are almost, but not quite, equally as good, Sparta and The Mars Volta.

Also Mother Love Bone mostly became Pearl Jam and they were/are both great bands imo.

Finally of course The Small Faces became The Faces

Nice one!

OK, so while John Mayalls Bluesbreakers were still going, which wasn't the question, I know but, how about Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Colosseum for starters. The list goes way onward.
As for break ups, does Blind Faith into Delaney&Bonnie&friends, Traffic (take 2),Family and Airforce count?
10c.c. into, um, 10c.c. and Godley/Creme nearly made the grade until they realised neither were that much cop.
Beatles to Plastic Ono Band, Wings, Hare Krishna Temple and All Starr Band?

Feel So Sad...

Spacemen 3 - Spiritualized - Spectrum

I also love the way that in my record collection they all sit next to each other alphabetically.

Deep Purple

to Whitesnake, which I think had 3 members of the former band at one point?

Cream to Blind Faith.

Led Zeppelin to Page & Plant. Does that count?

0
Steven C | 13 January 2009 - 12:28pm

and Rainbow

on the basis that both Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover were former Deep Purple.

rocker43 | 16 August 2009 - 10:08am

i know i can't really have

The Jam into From the Jam so I'll nominate The Beat into Fine Young Cannibals

0
badartdog | 13 January 2009 - 1:54pm

And then into

2 Men, A Drum Machine And A Trumpet - is that a band or a duo?

0
Sven Garlic | 13 January 2009 - 2:01pm

What about

The Birthday Party morphing into Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Both Nick Cave and Mick Harvey made the transition

0
Mint | 13 January 2009 - 2:06pm

more

Split Enz -> Crowded House
The Move -> ELO

0
Andrew Bradley | 13 January 2009 - 2:14pm

and...

Family ... Streetwalkers, who were great.
Specials ... Funboy Three, who were not so great.
Sex Pistols ... The Professionals, who weren't at all great.

0
Indus | 13 January 2009 - 8:06pm

Bodie and Doyle used to be in the Sex Pistols?

That's surprising, but just about believable. But Cowley? That I'm just not buying...

0
Patrick Crowther | 13 January 2009 - 9:25pm

Free

Became Bad Company.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 13 January 2009 - 9:04pm

For What Its Worth

For what its worth - Buffalo Springfield into CSN&Y (see what I did there!)

How about Linda Ronstadts backing band into The Eagles

Both seem to satisfy the "as good or better" test although I have doubts about the legitamacy of backing bands.

Byrds to Burritos?

Airplane to Starship? - probably fails the as good or better test though.

McCarthy morphed into Stereolab.

Great bands both.

0
Blue Sky | 14 January 2009 - 1:26am

Very late to this party

Found this thread whilst googling McCarthy
The Yardbirds changed into a pretty good band...

0
chuff | 16 August 2009 - 6:58am

Wasn't 'Googling McCarthy' an REM song?

On Document, I think.

btw does REM into Hindu Love Gods count?

0
Adman | 16 August 2009 - 8:24am

The Soft Machine

becoming Soft Machine ( until Robert was gone ).

0
RobertC | 16 August 2009 - 9:05am

Human League

Became Heaven 17.

Whilst Human League still kept going.

And at the same time, Ultravox! Became Ultravox. Does losing the exclamation mark count as a name change?

0
Lenny Law | 16 August 2009 - 10:00am

Guns n Roses to Velvet Revolver

3 ex members, Slash, Duff and Matt Sorum. Until their sad demise last year, they were a far better band than the ongoing Axl Rose fronted G'n'R project.

0
rocker43 | 16 August 2009 - 10:11am

Skip Bifferty

Into Arc
Into Bell + Arc
Into Blockheads (2 of them anyway)- probably with additions from Greatest Show On Earth.

Forevermore into Average White Band
via Glencoe etc.
