Originals

Charlie Gordon's picture

Who knew that Albert Hammond's was the original version? And it's better than the Hollies cover.

Any other originals that you didn't know about?

Heard this for the first time

just this year.

Two years before Jerry Lee, here's Big Maybelle with the 1955 original of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On.

The Dude

According to wikipedia, that was produced by a young Quincy Jones.

Johnny Rivers - By The Time I Get To Phoenix

Johnny Rivers, who effectively "discovered" and launched Jimmy Webb, also did the original of the Four Tops' "Do What You Gotta Do". I prefer the Tops take on it, but I prefer JR's "Phoenix"

The wonderful Doris Troy

wrote and recorded the original Just One Look. Criminally overlooked artist.

Unusually for a Motown hit

The 1966 original version of the '68 Four Tops' smash Walk Away Renee was by white boys The Left Banke.

I think it's much better.

The 5 Royales

recorded this back in 1957, nine years before the Mamas & Papas covered it.

For 30 years

I thought the original of Cream's Sitting On Top Of The World was by Howlin Wolf.

Then I discovered The Mississippi Sheiks:
