Original version was better

I was trawling through some of my dodgy compilation CDs yesterday and came across a rather nasty 70s collection of tunes.

Among the Sutherland Brothers and Chicory Tips, though, was John Kongos' fantastic version of 'Step On'.

Of course, this was most notably a hit for those Monday chappies, and I don't think most people know it was even a cover.

Naturally, the Massive will be far better informed, but for those of you who haven't heard it before...

I think they probably do

I certainly did.

The Mondays also covered his Tokoloshe Man didn't they?

I was always partial to this version myself

This came out in 1987 and features Alan Lancaster from ver Quo amongst others.

The album 'Kongos' from which both tracks are taken

is well worth investigating - it's available secondhand on CD via Amazon UK for about a tenner, or you can buy it from stock on Amazon US for around $13. Highly recommended.

The even better compilation called Tokoloshe Man, a victim of the See For Miles label farrago, is, as usual on Amazon these days, only available for stupid money second hand. Grab it if you see it your local 2nd hand CD market stall.
