Original score

jimmyshoes01's picture

Just watched American Beauty for the umpteenth time and the reason I keep returning to it more than any other is the incredible original score by Thomas Newman.
The story and acting are uniformly excellent but never before or since has an original score lifted a film to a level where it sits alone, it looks, feels and SOUNDS unique.
The sounds he creates for the mesmerising melodies compliment the atmosphere and intentions of the movie phenomenally well.
It is also the only original score I listen to again and again.
The popular music chosen is very good too but Newman really nailed it.

Nyman

I was obsessed by his 'Zed and Two Noughts' soundtrack, I adored the movie too.
I've fallen out with both Greenaway and Nyman, the latter still shines cf. Gattaca.

Wonderland

I'm a big fan of the Nyman soundtrack. The film's good as well.

Hans Zimmer - Inception

Went to see this recently and waited for the end credits to to find out who had done the score because the music was so good.
Just don't ask me to explain the plot though .

Clint Mansell and Cliff Martinez

amazingly similar names, backgrounds and soundtrack makers. Mansell's the ex Pop Will Eat Itself guy and is responsible for the music to 'The Fountain' and 'Moon' ... and Martinez composed the music for Soderbergh's 'Solaris'.

'Moon' and 'Solaris' scores are so similar - in a really good way - and work outside of the sci-fi films they were composed for.

I would place them alongside the Newman score for repeated 'listenability'.

I haven't seen the movie

or heard the soundtrack since it came out, but I really liked Stewart Copelands music for Rumble Fish.
A pleasant surprise since very few of his songs for the Police were any good ( but Darkness is one of my favourites, and I loved his album The Rythmatist so I shouldn't have been too surprised ).

Thomas Newman - genius

I cannot enthuse enough about Thomas Newman. His compositions and sound collages are totally unique, providing the film with great depth and emotion.

He's also the king at quirky vignettes - the title music to Six Feet Under IMHO remins one of the best title music compositions for TV.

In addition to American Beauty check out his work for:

- Road to Perdition
- Shawshank Redemption
- Cinderella Man
- An Unfortunate Sequence of Events
- Wall:e
- Finding Nemo

Stunning body of work. More of him please.....

I am not a fan of his usual work...

... but having just watched The Social Network I feel the urge to big up Trent Reznor. His work with David Fincher is really rather good.

Just listening to the American Beauty soundtrack

and enjoying it very much. I like soundtrack albums with original material. My particular favourites are those from Randy Newman, with Ragtime the one I play most.

Before it became one long car ad

I had this on minidisc

and listened to it over an over in the late '80's whilst going back and forth between Milan and Chicago. Great for long hours in the air.
