Optimo RIP

Doods's picture

Tonight is the last night of the Optimo club at the Sub Club in Glasgow.

I am not a natural clubber and have hated most clubs I was ever at but Optimo was so much a cut above. I don't live in Glasgow anymore and thought I was finished with the clubs, but I belatedly discovered Optimo. My friends there would think it was some sort of midlife crisis, but it was so hugely enjoyable in a way these clubs would make out they were but so rarely were. They released a CD collection a few years ago and its only rival for me of its type was the 2 Many DJs platter.

An idea of how eclectic it was can be gauged from their posted list of the fave tracks:

http://www.optimo.co.uk/blog/

and someone has come up with a Spotify list of about two thirds of them.

I am pig sick I won't be there for the last night. Still, all things must pass.

Brilliant post

I'm 43 now but remember the halcyon days of the Sub Club, and the few Slams and thereafter Optimos I went to had that vibe - all the funk and groove none of the bullsh*t. They'll be back.

Mix 'Tape'

I found a great wee Optimo mix tape this afternoon - you can get it here...

It's been compiled in tribute to tonight being the last night.

Had one of the best nights of my life

at Optimo. I was fortunate enough to have food with Twitch and Wilkes beforehand, then get completely trashed with them, stood behind the decks with them, went back to a party at either Twitch or Wilkes' house and made a complete fool of myself with Aidan out of Arab Strap ("I love you, man!"), got up the next morning, continued with the party, got a flight home, resurfaced two days later. Crikey. The whole thing was a perfect storm of music nerdery and being wasted -- which pretty much sums up the entire Optimo ethic. They got me into Suicide and Lee Hazlewood, and for that I'm eternally grateful.

I've got three of their New Year's mixes that I'm happy to copy for anybody who wants to PM me, plus you'll find some stuff on this blog http://rippedinglasgow.blogspot.com/ Also, Optimo are mixing the next instalment of the Fabric series. Should be a goodie!

I got a compilation album of theirs (How To Kill the DJ)

which featured (of all people) arch-Dadists Nurse With Wound. I was impressed at the eclectic mix of artists. But then I read this from the NWW man himself, and I've since gone off them a bit:
