Ongoing unavailability of humungous swathe of UK folk music; what gives?

Triff new ish out.

The Royal Mail are obviously going for it this week; my new Word has arrived, hurrah! Good work on the last minute changes folks.

I note that Jude Rogers has been listening to Bright Phoebus on vinyl, as have I. Is there any mileage in Word digging into the issues behind why it, and other related material like Nic Jones work, isn't properly available anywhere?

This is a very tricky subject...

...as much of the reason lies with a famously litigious individual who controls the masters and doesn't appear to have any intention of releasing them. If you head over to the Mudcat forum and search for Dave Bulmer you'll find chapter and verse at length.

Nic Jones does have half a dozen albums available directly from his website , all of which are very good and recommended.

Well, I tried that some while ago.

But after half an hour I was beginning to lose the will to live. I had hoped that someone could provide, or investigate and report upon, a succinct and truthful summary of the status quo without all the paranoia, petulance and associated paraphernalia.

Well yes...

...it is a bit like that but largely because of the strength of feeling about the issue.

As I understand it, the essence of the matter is that Dave Bulmer over time bought up the rights to a lot of music from other labels, sometimes when they went under, sometimes as a normal business transation. He is now sitting on a vast treasure trove that for unknown reasons he refuses to release. The loss of income from these recordings being unavailable for sale has caused real problems for a number of musicians - Nic Jones for example only had one album officially available for ages - and hence much bad feeling. There are also related issues about unapproved CDRs of music that Mr Bulmer apparently owns being offered for sale commercially from time to time and no royalties being paid on them, unfair contracts and so on.

Its all rumbled on for years and years now and there appears no prospect of this music ever resurfacing as long as Mr Bulmer owns it.
