"One! Two!!"
Posted by itfc1959 on 5 August 2011 - 12:31pm.
Time for more lists, I think.
This is for the best two opening tracks on an album (not a compilation or greatest hits thingummy). I was listening to some VU this morning and thought, well, that can't be bettered. A first album and two tracks that tell you everything you are ever going to need to know about this band.
So, here we are then, from the Banana Album:
1. Sunday Morning
2. I'm Waiting For The Man.
Can't beat that. Or can you?
Allez!

If I can make it 3
The Clash...Give Em Enough Rope
1. Safe European Home
2. English Civil War
3. Tommy Gun
The album gets a slating, but I like it well enough, and I think they never sounded better in their 'rock' clothes than this sequence. Razor sharp, and with English Civil War in the middle (which on it's own probably doesn't stand up too well, it's certainly far from their best)the two bookends become the best attack of any The Clash ever made...
I agree with 1 & 2
But Tommy Gun is surely one of the reasons why GEER got slated.
It's just occurred to me that Guns On The Roof is another terribly bad Clash song, alongside possibly the worst which is Guns Of Brixton.
Seems the Clash never learned how bad guns could be.
you're forgetting Exile...
surely Rocks Off followed by Rip This Joint is one of the finest One-Twos in popular music?
how about LZ4
- black dog followed by rock n roll?
That lot again
Drive My Car
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Sort of a parallel between the 2 albums there as well
Can't believe no-one has yet mentioned
1. Trouble
2. Delicious
on the album no home should be without, We Are Shampoo.
Steve Miller / Jimi Hendrix / Weather Report
Fly Like an Eagle into Wild Mountain Honey is a powerful twofer, and my US copy of Are You Experienced starts with Purple Haze/Manic Depression/Hey Joe. Heavy Weather, meanwhile, has Birdland followed by the absolutely wonderful A Remark You Made.
How,and indeed, zat?
man after my own heart
the Steve Miller link reminds me of this thread from a while ago:

Likewise, Nick..
good jolt. I'll be pulling out a few of those albums presently.
Bowie! Bowie!
1.Station to Station
2. Golden Years
Further comment superfluous....
However, if I can revert to stereotype & suggest a further two (NOT Bowie):
1. Pilgrims
2. Still Life
they look like
tracks by VdGG to me, but then I'm pretty progressive
Well.....
...you win the white carnation...
Jam
All Mod Cons
To Be Someone
Sound Affects
Pretty Green
Mondays
EatB and HUH
1. A Show of Strength
2. With a Hip
so good in fact, I'm gonna listen to them right now
That
is a winning pair.
I have always thought so, from the very first time I heard Heaven Up Here. Love at first listen.
Agreed...
... a great album - much better than the poppy OR and P.
Bob:
1. Subterranean Homesick Blues
2.She Belongs to me
1. Tangled Up In Blue
2. Simple Twist Of Fate
I always seem to bring Prince on board, but, hey ho...
1. 1999
2. Little Red Corvette.
My work here is done.
Er, not quite done...
the Jackson Two:
1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
2. Rock With You
How about...
1. Search And Destroy
2. Gimme Danger
I Don't Wanna Kiss You, I Don't Wanna Touch...
1. No Action
2. This Year's Girl
Off of Elvis's 'This Year's Model'...
...is the right answer.
Blood and Chocolate
1 Uncomplicated
2 I Hope You're Happy Now
Was another McManus sublime opening pair.
Underworld, Dubnobasswithmyheadman
1. Dark & Long
2. Mmm Skyscraper I Love You
All of side one if you have the lp
certainly helps you to think of them as a pair..
Brothers and sisters I wanna see a sea of hands
Rambling Rose and kick out the jams.
Mc5.
Banshees - The Scream
1. Pure (eerie instrumental)
2. Jigsaw Feeling (exhilarating punk classic with possibly the best ever ending to a song)
