One Song - Right Now
If you could take just one song right now, not a classic, not your favourite band, not your favourite artist, just your favourite song of right now, what is it?
This is mine right now.
Lyrically for a guy in his 40's I connect with it. For today anyway.
Death Cab For Cutie - Brothers On A Hotel Bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be
No longer easy on the eyes
These wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
When he catches his reflection on accident
On the back of a motor bike
With your arms outstretched trying to take flight
Leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
And I have learned
That even landlocked lovers yearn
For the sea like navy men
'Cause now we say goodnight
From our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
'Cause I'm not who I used to be

The Mountain Goats – The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
were a couple of guys
who'd been friends since grade school
one was named Sirus
the other was Jeff
and they practiced twice a week in Jeff's bedroom
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
never settled on a name
but the top three contenders
after weeks of debate
were Satan's Fingers and The Killers and The Hospital Bombers
Jeff and Sirus believed in their hearts
they were headed for stage lights and Lear jets and fortune and fame
so in script that made prominent use of a pentagram
they stencilled their drumheads and guitars with their names
This is how Sirus got sent to the school
where they told him he'd never be famous
And this was why Jeff
in the letters he'd write to his friend
helped develop a plan to get even
When you punish a person for dreaming his dream
don't expect him to thank or forgive you
The best ever death metal band out of Denton
will in time both outpace and outlive you
Hail Satan!
Hail Satan tonight!
Hail Satan!
Hail, hail!
Next week
This is going to be my favourite song.
The Commander Thinks Aloud - The Long Winters
This is top of my tree at the moment. Can't find the version I'm listening to but this live versions pretty good. Song starts about 1 min in.
Given this song is about the Space Shuttle Columbia, it's gentle beauty is very impressive.
Boys and girls in cars
Dogs and birds on lawns
From here I can touch the sun
Yeah yeah
Put your jackets on
I feel we're being born
The Tropic of Capricorn is below
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
We stall above the pole
Still your face is young
As we feel our weight return
Yeah yeah
A trail of shooting stars
The horses call of storm
Because the air contains the charge
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
The radio is on
And Houston knows the score
Can you feel it?
We're almost home
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
The crew compartment's breaking up
Sounds like it was recorded in a garden shed
with a load of out-of-tune instruments.
And probably was.
But I love it to bits. (Especially the yelps)
Henry Priestman - Don't You Love Me No More?
Okay, you've heard the song on this month's Word CD but it is now a single, gathering airplay. Bit strange in the middle of the video but it is still my fave at the moment (for the reasons contained in the lyrics).
"Say Hey (I Love You)" by Michael Franti and Spearhead
Possibly in a month's time I'll find this annoying, but for now it's catchy and uplifting and I like it:
The Hungry Saw - Tindersticks
Great song, and this is a great version:
This gets the juices flowing first thing in the morning
on the walk into work. The following version of 'Baby It's You' is 'new' to me and is truly great - saw Tarantino's 'Death Proof' and loved the soundtrack on which this features. So here is 'Baby It's You' by Smith. Also nice clip of the 45 single in action on the turntable:
The Roots - Rising Up
Pretty much the best group in hip-hop nowadays.
Not a song...
... but a beautiful tune and it tops my ipod "most played"
The video is impressive as well. Worth 5 minutes of yr time...
Fabienne Del Sol
Heard this on Marc Riley's show the other day and I can't seem to shake the chorus out of my head.
The Shins - Gone For Good
And here's a bonus - Gone for Good and Turn On Me, another absolute belter. Good acoustic versions busked on a Paris street.
"Vice President Of Volcanoes" by unknown
The song doesn't exist but it was listed as a song on a made up album (using this method http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/create-imaginary-album).
It makes me imagine a light and breezy jazz inflected pop song with symphonic parts, basically like the score for The Incredibles cartoon. And the lyrics walk the fine line between funny and serious. I imagine the swelling climatic strings are similar to the strings on the Garbage Bond theme for "The World Is Not Enough".
Ain't this just dandy?
Death Songs
I love songs written by the departed, "Long Black Veil"/The Band being my favourite ever since I heard it. Until "Frankies Gun" from the Felice Bros latest!
Just fabulous. Lyrics are a little, um, indistinct, so this is the best I can come up with:

Today I have been mostly been whistling this
The Church Under The Milky Way
Takes me back to college for some reason.
One of my favourite tunes
Eels "Things The Grandchildren Should Know"
