One for my baby

minibreakfast's picture

Jay Z has just recorded a song about his new daughter Blue Ivy. It's not his best work, but as a rush job by an ecstatic new father it's quite sweet.

What other artists have written songs about their newborns? Apart from Stevie's Isn't She Lovely, Bowie's Kooks and Lauryn Hill's To Zion, what else can we think of?

A double

From the younger Gallagher - the infamous 'Little James' and the excellent 'Born on a Different Cloud'

Before Top Gun

I seem to recall Kenny Loggins did quite a nice song with Jim Messina called Danny's Song.........

i wondered about ages ... so had a quick google

i think Sarah (Lynott) was born in December '78 which now makes her 33 ... and (well-kent pop fact ahoy) her maternal granddad was Leslie Crowther

RT

According to the biography Strange Affair Richard Thompson wrote End of the Rainbow for his daughter Kamilla, who is herself featured on the CD with the new issue of Word. When the 'little horror' was old enough to understand the song she was understandably put out, and RT wrote King of Bohemia in response. (All of this is from memory, but I'm pretty sure it's as written.)

Father And Daughter

by Paul Simon. Which was released not long after the birth of my own and affected me deeply

So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

I don't know if Jackson Browne wrote it for his progeny but The Only Child puts me in mind of my boy and my younger self too. I love the lines

Boy of mine
As your fortune comes to carry you down the line
And you watch as the changes unfold
And you sort among the stories you've been told
If some pieces of the picture are hard to find
And the answers to your questions are hard to hold

Take good care of your mother...

There's always

the ever popular wedding classic "Rufus is a Tit Man" by Loudon Wainwright III. I can't think of any more off the top of my head.

Chris Martin named his son, born 2006, after a live track they released in 2003, but I don't think that's the right way round somehow.

Feeling 'shy' about this one.......

Kid Creole and his Cocoanuts 'Annie I'm Not Your Daddy!'

I may have missed the point on this thread......;)

This one just gets me

Divine Comedy - Charmed Life

Well the course of true love never ran smooth
They broke my heart, and I broke theirs too
And breaking up was so very hard to do
But I knew I’d find the one
And sure enough she came along
And not long after that along came you

...then the song takes flight - I always well up at that bit. (From around 3.40 in the clip.)

Angie

Angie by The Stones. It was usually said that Keith Richards wrote this about his new daughter. However, his autobiography now says its infact Heroin. Keith has famously never let the truth get in the way of a good story...
