Entertainment For Lively Minds
Olympic Handover
As a supporter of our hosting of the 2012 Olympics I duly applied for and received tickets for the "big" party in The Mall to celebrate the handover from Beijing to London in August. This came with the promise of "big name acts" for entertainment before and after the Olympic flag is passed to Boris or Sebastian or whoever.
Now in reality I didn't have any high hopes for truly "top-drawer" music, but deep down was longing for something a bit different. Dream on. What we are getting is The Feeling (OK, a bit of fun), Il Divo, Katherine Jenkins, Russell Watson (half-baked opera for the Daily Mail readership) and McFlea (strewth!).
How is it that these hackneyed names consistently get trotted out at every fundraiser, sports event and kiddies party? Is everyone else un-interested, too expensive or conscious that in fact there is the "wrong type of exposure". Discuss.

...but I am not a supporter of the Olympics, which will cost us a fortune we don't have for a bunch of drug addled showoffs to dominate the telly for two weeks, leaving us with a load of white elephant buildings we have no use for. Maybe the acts you refer to also suspect this is actually "The Dome 2 - Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the East End". Hope it's good though, for your sake. I shall be going abroad.
