OLDEST LIVE ACT
Posted by CharlieB on 2 February 2010 - 1:10pm.
Tonight I shall be going to see the legendary Judy Collins in Cardiff. Which set me thinking if this will be the oldest person I have ever seen perform live.
Judy will be 71 on the 1 May this year.
Any other oldies still on the circuit?

Gary Peacock, Carla Bley, Len
I saw the great jazz pianist Carla Bley perform a few months ago. She's 73.
Also, Gary Peacock, double-bass player of the Keith Jarrett Trio, is 74.
And of course, L. Cohen, the great bard of Montreal, is 75.
I saw T Model Ford about 4 years ago.
He was born around 1922. The exact date isn't known.
T Model Ford
I saw "T" play last year, so he's still going strong.
Apart from that, I saw Jimmy Scott in 2004, when he would have been about 78. He's still performing.
Les Paul played live into his nineties, I believe.
T Model Ford
Hasn't he just come out of Prison?
I've seen these whippersnappers
The youngest was only 80 at the time. The others were in long trousers, though - in their nineties.
Ian Hunter
Still going strong and allegedly 71 this year.
I saw a Muddy Waters reunion band last year....
.....Muddy wasn't there obviously.
Bass player Calvin Fuzz Jones was 82 at the time and harmonica player James Cotton was 83.
Leonard Cohen
is the obvious one for me. Saw him last year - brilliant.
He's 112.
Wayne Shorter
I saw Wayne Shorter a couple of years ago. He would have been 73 then.
Jet Black (still going) & Compay Segundo (RIP)
Inevitable mention for Stranglers drummer/ice cream entrepreneur Jet Black, 72 this year. A punk, three years younger than Elvis.
I loved that interview in "Buena Vista Social Club" (the documentary) in which the late, great Compay Segundo - then in his 90's - puffed away on a top quality cigar and spoke with a sly grin and a twinkle in his eye about, among other things, his irrepressible sex drive.
I saw BB King
a few years back. He had to sit down most otf the time but he's still admirably spry
I saw Rubén González at Ronnie Scott's in the mid-1990s...
and he must have been getting on for 80. I remember he had to shake his hands before playing an extended solo piece at the piano because he was suffering from arthritis.
It was one of the most joyous musical occasions I've been present at.
Prince Buster
Not in the best of health these days, but certainly over 70.
And Chuck Berry is certainly one of the oldest swingers in town - 83 I believe.
Pete Seeger though is in his 90s, and still performing.
Bill Wyman
Now 73, possible even 74 now. As I said in another thread, I went to see him with my rather cool 87 year old mother last year and found it somehow unsettling to realise that she is nearer his age than I am. Surely we shouldn't all have been there (and I fear that it is I who must decamp).
Another couple
I also saw Ruben Gonzalez (who Patrick mentioned above) on the same bill as Ibrahim Ferrer in 1999. I think Ruben was 80 at the time, while Ibrahim was around 72. It's still one of the most beautiful gigs I've ever seen. Unfortunately, they've both passed on since.
Also been to see Tony Bennett a few times as well. The last time was (I think) in 2005, and he would have been about 79.
JUDY COLLINS
Seeing as I started this, I guess I better tell you that Judy's gig in Cardiff was postponed until 12 February.
Unsure if this was age related though.
Pinetop Perkins...
....played in Edinburgh last year or maybe the year before. Unfortunately I couldn't go....he's in his 90's.
Wasn't that...
a bit ageist of you?
UPDATE
Judy is coming back to The Globe in Cardiff on 14 June. She will be 72!
