OK, I'm ready.
I've finally finished Series 4 of The Wire, and I now want to watch that trailer that David Hepworth posted back in January:
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/quotso-duck-goes-barquot-0
But it's not available. I just looked on YouTube, and I'm too scared in case I run into spoilers.
Anyone?
Then I'm going to bed. Honest.

Thanks
That's really good. New series on Monday! Sheeeeeeeeiiiiiiiittttttttt.....
Monday where?
I've just finished series 4 this week as well - what do you mean new series Monday. is it readily available somewhere? I'm sure this has been covered here before, so forgive me for repetition. Series 4 could be the best series of television ever. In fact that doesn't seem enough praise.
FX
Series 5 starts FX channel (165 on Sky) Monday at 10pm
and one for the 'unlikely fans of The Wire' section...
Last nights Corrie - Lloyd says of Steve, going to meet his erstwhile missus at neutral territory "oooh it's just like an episode of The Wire - goin' to meet rats at quiet street corners and the like"
And, indeed, the other way round
As in the scene where Clay Davis complains to Delegate Watkins, negotiating the names for the 8th District ticket, "Sheeeeeeee-yeart, I'll trade you my boy Alfie Roberts for your Councilman Fairclough."
It's going to be interesting
I've been watching The Wire for a year now, thanks to the article in Word. We all have different demands in our life: I've been juggling a degree and childcare and simply haven't been able to watch it at the rate that some of the Word staff and bloggers have. I'm really looking forward to watching these last ten episodes simultaneously with some of the people who have written so persuasively about it and got me watching it in the first place. It'll be interesting. I expect nothing less than a weekly, Wire-centric version of the Glastonbury and Brits blogathons every Tuesday. See you guys there, right?
Er...can we wait a bit?
Some of us are waiting for the DVD boxset of season 5 in September.
Probably know this....
.... but Play USA are advertising the region 1 boxset for 12th August. I think that may be my preferred choice of viewing - particularly as I presume FX is one of them there commercial stations that short advertising films within their scheduled programming.
I can't be doing with the once-a-week format
I don't read novels by reading one chapter every Monday night. The same with The Wire: I watch two or three...leave it for a bit...then one more...then another rest....

Like Lucas, I've fully
Like Lucas, I've fully caught up in time to watch season five as it debuts on FX. Perhaps there could be a separate thread to discuss it so as to not spoil it for box-set viewers. Only 10 episodes though?! Anyone know if it will be on FX HD?
Today's Observer and Independent
The Obbo has a piece with a bunch of UK crime writers giving their views of the show. (WARNING: If you haven't finished season 4, don't read John Harvey's section - it contains a disastrous spoiler.)
It's a perfectly reasonable read, but it's left in the shade by our own, our very own Andy Lynes's report in the Indy of his trip to Baltimore with Prop Joe and the show's production designer (i.e. location scout) as his guides:
Pseuds' Corner fodder? If you think so, you haven't seen The Wire.
You are way too kind
Thanks for the big up, I'm blushing as I type. The version in the paper includes a street map of Baltimore, which might come in handy if you fancy doing the tour yourself, and a terrible picture of me with Robert F Chew (who looks great)taken by a very nice lady from the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association for their files and which the Indy has somehow got their hands on. Grrr.
Although Vince Peranio is the location scout for the show, his role as production designer is a lot more than that and covers the whole look of the show. He's a Baltimore resident (hence he knows the city tlike the bak of his hand) and has worked on most, if not all of John Walters films.
He does a commentary
on one of the DVDs, when he explains everything from what building had to double for what (they had trouble getting the Maryland Governor's office, probably because the real Governor, Martin O'Malley, is so obviously the model for Carcetti) right down to how they chose the scissored ties for the Homicide wall display.
Production design is a huge job, when you think about it. What should Kima's apartment look like? What would Omar have in his van? How tidy should Stringer's copy shop be?
What with choosing and finding everything from all the tat at Prop Joe's place to papering Baltimore with Royce's sub-Marcus Garvey election posters. . . . he must have been the hardest-working person on the while show.

2 Months
I got into The Wire just this year and couldn't get enough, watched all 5 series in just over 2 months. I loved it, but a big part of me wishes I'd taken more time over it. Having the series over ten weeks, or even six years as many have must have been a pleasure too. I watch Lost and having seen it week by week from the start only adds to the obsession, even with the frustration when an episode ends.
