Oh those Russians!
Posted by Dave Amitri on 2 December 2010 - 6:48pm.
So we lost and the Russians won, good say I. All that bloody pandering to FIFA was always going to be a waste of time. So to congratulate our comrades from the East lets have some Russian based tunes. I'll start with Boney M

Obvious I know
Sorry It's Not Rachmaninov
But this is Prokofiev
A (Steve) Strange decision, Midge U(we)re robbed!
(Visage, Moon Over Moscow)
Slightly less obvious
A Waterboys classic
Red Army Blues:
Eduard Khil
Dmitri Shostakovich
He was a fully qualified football referee, too.
Named after a Russian author
and they sound kinda eastern - Gogol Bordello rocking out at Coachella
and a word from Robert Wyatt
The future of rock n roll circa 1986
Orange Juice - Moscow
Gotta say - Arshavin played a blinder this morning. Played Becks off the park, and he was excellent.
A bit obvious, but what a voice
PS Glad to see Cameron fall flat on his face.
Russian Beatles? Da Da Da!
Hey ho, let's go.
I'm going with Cretin Hop, because it's on Rocket To Russia and is fucking marvellous. Tenuous schmenuous.
Russian Literature by Maximo Park:
Scorpions - Wind of Change (just for the general Eastern Bloccery and the Gorky Park line. Also for the fact that's it's ACE.)
Have an up for Rocket To Russia
I know this runs counter to the orthodoxy, but it's my favourite Ramones album. (There. I've said it. It's not the Pop Art of the first, but it probably has the best songs of them all.)
Anyway, got to run, I'm switching off all the electricity in the house so I don't watch Nadine Dorries on Question Time : I'd end up hoarse from shouting and knee-deep in the TV.
My favourite Ramones album too.
It's non-stop genius, and has converted many a doubter in my experience.
I assume you've heard
The Vaccines Bob (damn you Blackadder). They do say imitation etc. etc.
I have, Dave, yeah.
Saw them on Jools and wasn't very convinced, to be honest. Maybe I'm just getting prematurely middle-aged, but they seem like they've quite deliberately taken large chunks out of The Strokes' playbook and updated them with a bit more of a shoutalong Ramonesy aspect and the currently obligatory swashes of reverb. It seems a bit, I dunno, stitched together.
But then, I suppose, most of the Vaccines' audience probably don't even remember The Strokes' first sortie, so maybe it seems tremendously exciting to them. After all, "Is This It?" is nearly ten years old now. Jesus.
Let It Be!
I'll go for this and this
None more Russian
I give you, Ivan Rebroff:
Wot, no Sting?
Don't you know the Russians love their football too?
Yes, they're from Finland..
but they do a rather fine version of the above...
Not a road any home nation is likely to take
My 'favourite' chinless wonder:
Fiddler on the FIFA exec committee
"If I Were Roman Abramovich":
And, because it's beautiful, "Sunrise, Sunset":
You're fired!
*points at UK bid team*
A lovely 1980's tune
Elton John releases this.
Cold war ends. Can world peace be far away?
Revol
The Korgis - Young 'n' Russian
A late addition...
