I'm not surprised

she fell over wearing those heels. I don't know what his excuse is though.

To Be Someone Must Be A Wonderful Thing

A famous footballer, a rock singer, or a big film star - yes, I think I would like that. Getting drugged up with my trendy friends. they really dig me man and I dig them; and the bread I spend, is like my fame, it's quickly diminished. Mr Weller checked his dignity into the cloakroom when the success of Wildwood went to his head. Snivelling at the Brits (under the guise of "just getting my dues, man") was a low point for anyone clinging to respect for PW. Should we be surprised that the slide continues? There's a tramp in Liverpool called Plinky Plink. He stands outside the pubs with a cardboard banjo, pretending to play by shouting plinky plink at the top of his voice. I'll check he isn't wearing a fishtail parka next time I see him.

Leave Weller Alone

That's a bit harsh isn't it Brian? Haven't you been drunk and made a fool of yourself before?

I'm not about to condone PW's behaviour - he's obviously going through the misery of splitting from his ex-partner and it doesn't look good that he's rolling about the floor with a new girlfriend half his age. Plus it's upsetting for his family to see too.

But this is none of my business - I enjoy Weller's music and have no interest in what he gets up in his personal life.

I'm a bit disappointed that The Word emailed this item to me as part of the newsletter – I expect more from The Word than this kind of tragic voyeurism – please leave it to The Sun.

For me as a long time fan, I know these are the kind of antics that the young Paul Weller would have hated and been appalled by. But as we get older, things do not run as smoothly as we'd hope, and unfortunately I know this having been through a messy split myself in recent years.

Paul should look after himself though, I don't want him chased around town like Amy Winehouse – he's a musician not a celebrity.

Glad you said that

I was thinking something similar. I wouldn't wish to be famous and have dickheads filming me or snapping me at a bad time, who then send the results to the Sun or whoever. I speak as someone who is not especially a Weller fan, though do like some of his work.

My Original Post

It must be said that my original post was more to do with his awful, drunken Hendrix singsong than about how hes run off with the work experience girl.....

My Original Post

Have to agree - the singing is the biggest crime here !!! (I may have been harsh on the first post - I have no place to comment on his relationships - none of my business or anyone elses really.) When you set yourself up as the standard bearer for anti rock star behaviour it is a long way down when you join the action full on. Leaves the long term "fans" (I would put myself in that category) feeling a little empty (betrayed is too strong a word - after all - its only pop music). Having just read Ian MacNabb's book where he goes through the same process that PW is going through now I would maybe recommend a copy of the CD single (Let The Young Girl Do What She Wants To). I am 42 next year and starting to look forward to my mid-life crisis if its that much fun !!!

For fucks sake leave the man alone!

The thing with Weller (and I'm no big fan) is that he's always been up front about liking a piss-up. This is no mid-life crisis as far as the drink is concerned as he's always been on the lash. To be honest, if I'm not in a similar condition by 2am tomorrow I'll be bloody upset! Give the guy a break, we're all a long time dead.

I AM F*CKING SICK OF THE WORD''S

attitude towards Paul Weller. I am f*cking sick of David Hepworth linking to the Daily f*cking Mail - here on this website and now in the mail out. The Daily Mail have always been a bunch of spiteful c*nts, please, The Word - don't go the same way.

It's funny, though. . .

how Paul Weller seems to swallow his principles by granting the Daily Mail one interview after another whenever he's got a collection of shirts or an album to promote.

I don't expect the current Guttergate™ affair to affect next year's date for him to sup with the Devil.

Well

those interviews took place before recent events. He may well be relucant to talk to Sun or Mail for a while now. Not sure why he shouldn't have talked to Mail on those 2 occasions anyway. I am sure he's well aware what their editorial views are but lots of performers/celebs speak to those with different views to themselves to promote their wares.

What I'm uncomfortable with are posts that are based on tabloid tales where certain judgements/assumptions are being made when we do not know what really happened or where the story has dubious ethical basis, and so we should perhaps not be joining in with the so-called 'fun'.

But pop itself...

is built on tabloid tales, isn't it, Sven? After all, I doubt it was the Telegraph or the Thunderer who came up with "the Fab Four" or "the "Moptops" - or, indeed, "the Modfather".

Once again - as in the Springsteen/Wal-Mart thread - we're faced with the head-to-head clash between the idealistic view of popsters and rockers as artists of integrity who merit Pinter-level respect and devotion* and the commercial nitty-gritty of aging musos just earning a living. And if Paul Weller considers his chic chemise preferences to be of sufficient interest to Mail readers, surely it's only fair to expect him to accept that they'll be equally interested in his caterwauling and gutter-crawling escapades. Like Sammy Cahn said, you can't have one without the (beat) other.

And has Grub Street ever really done any pop star's career any real harm? Reputations may suffer in the short term (as did Jerry Lee's in the Fifties, or P.J. Proby's in the Sixties, for instance), but ultimately no publicity is bad publicity. I suspect Madonna would be rather perplexed - not to say quite appalled - if we didn't know all about her kaballatastic divorce settlement.

(*And even he was hammered by Private Eye for his pro-Sandinista fundraising soirées in Holland Park.)

No idealism from me

about rockers - these folk can be as much dicks as the rest of us, they are also business people of a kind of course, who have a product to sell. I realise there is a sort of trade-off with tabloids regarding stories and stars need the interest to be there from the media. I think it's different if you blatantly court attention, a la Winehouse, Doherty and Hilton, as in wantonly displaying your lack of dignity on leaving The Ivy, rather than getting plastered in a hidden away bar in Prague. I'm not sure though that promoting yourself in the papers should give them carte blanche to print anything - that doesn't seem a fair deal. But of course the tabloids have no scruples and that won't change. Doesn't mean we have to participate or like it though.

I know nothing of

Madonna's divorce settlement - which Something for the week-end email linked to that story?

Word/Weller

You're sick of The Word's attitude to Paul Weller? This would be the same magazine who gave his recent album a full-page, overwhelmingly positive review?

0
Barry Womm | 2 January 2009 - 3:22pm

Oh that's okay then -

though no doubt when he releases his next one they'll wait to see what the Mail and the Sun say about it.

Happy New Year!

I mean, sheesh.
