Of Montreal - any good?

Retro Man's picture

I heard a track by Of Montreal that I really liked, it reminded me a bit of early Sparks. I checked emusic and they have 10 albums listed, any fans amongst the Word massive - if so, where do I start?

Skeletal Lamping

One of my favourite albums of last year.

You're right about Sparks ... I'd also suggest Scissor Sisters

The packaging is lovely too

That name

If I were compiling a list of worst band names (and I know there's already at least one thread about this), Of Montreal would be one of the first names I'd write down. It just seems wrong. It conveys nothing - which is not necessarily a band thing - and is dull beyond belief.

The music? Never heard it.

Sorry, that wasn't much help was it?

Camp Montreal

They're great: Scissor Sisters meets the Beach Boys, or at least High Llamas. With the camp button turned up to 11.
Great return to disco basslines in some of the songs, which can be as long and as high concept as their titles. Eg, my favourite and a good way in, is called 'Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games' off The Sunlandic Twins (below).
Have never witnessed them live to see if they carry it off, but they're playing NZ in late Feb.
