Not Of This Time But Damn Good

Of all the songs given the usually unpleasant description of being heavily influenced by 80s synth pop, this is one of the few that is both totally plagiaristic and quite wonderful in its own right. I may still have to report these boys to the exam board though...

The Horrors

I've rather warmed to them. They genuinely seem to want to be different by making music influenced by what they like rather than using influences as a strategy to reconstitute themselves as flavour of the month. Their music has ambition and they've managed to create an aura about them, largely by keeping one step ahead of preconceptions rather than pandering to them. They're interesting but have the musical chops to back up that interest.

I love Sea Within A Sea. Like the OP track you can spot the influences and references (visually and aurally) but it's a delight to see a new band taking these influences and remoulding them rather than deifying them.

The new album is streaming over at http://www.thehorrors.co.uk

They were excellent supporting Pulp on Sunday & the new stuff is very impressive. Check out 'Still Life' & 'Moving Further Away'

They are...

...very good indeed. I saw them at Manchester Academy recently and it was one of the best gigs I've been to in recent times. I've heard the new album (tut, tut) and it's less 'experimental', a bit more 'pop' than Primary Colours, but still pretty good. If you like Sea Within A Sea you ought to like Moving Further Away on Skying.
