Not Drinking in January

dai's picture

Going to give my liver a rest after the "festivities", aim is to manage a month starting some time in the first week of 2012. I try to do this most years. I believe a certain Mr Ellen has been known to take a break too.

Anybody going to join me?

0

Sadly I am.

Mainly because I'm broke though.

Yes

Yeah, I am going to try as well. Apart from my birthday on the 12th January.

Apart form the

6th, the 21st and the 27th, I'm in.

Does that count?

OK , I'll give it a go

apart from the 5th- dinner party at my house and a dinner party ain't a dinner party with out some wine and then a little port. But after that I'm in.
My brother takes September to December every year as a hiatus. Has been doing so for 20 plus years now. Might take a leaf from his book and make it a tradition

Sounds like a plan,

Especially as Christmas / winter solstice is the perfect time to break a fast, whereas a January hiatus leaves nothing to look forward to except the, er, first of February...

I'll join you...

although I already started nine years ago. Does that matter?

No

You have to take it up again, just for the month.

Kidding of course, keep up the good work.

i always try to do this

during lent. I'm not religious, but it's a good excuse as its a bit longer than a month, however it has the problematic St Patrick's day in the middle (my other half is from an Irish family), but I may be tempted - depends on my New Year's Day situation :-)

Sort of

For the last five years or so I've done from my birthday (5th) to the end of the month. This year, it's until the 28th (self-promoting a gig, I'll need a tincture when that's over, judging by the last one.) Still, three weeks is better than nowt.

Try February if you've not dried out before.

It's shorter.
(Though this is a leap year...)

Probably ought to take the whole year off the sauce.

Got to be sharp for the Mayan Meltdown.

What's

the [biological] rationale behind doing this?

None

Apparently ...

It's a test of will power and helps the waistline. I may allow myself 3 "jokers" this year.

That's me out then

Intake of alcohol seems to be one of those things that different health professionals have different views on. One report says one thing and one says another, it's the same with coffee. My bottle of beer a day is well below the random 21 units a week so I reckon as there are benefits of alcohol intake, I'm probably on the right side... everything in moderation... except perhaps record buying!

Good luck to all you abstainers, but I won't be joining you.

Admittedly, I drank enough booze to fell an elephant on New Year's Eve & I made a bit of a fool of myself, but I can't imagine not having a lovely glass of red come Friday evening...

If I write it here...

If I write it here, hopefully it will give me more of an incentive to succeed!
Big 50 for me this year and I can't remember the last time I managed more than a week without alcohol.
So here goes...
