North-West Massive - Next Meeting-Liverpool - Philharmonic Pub

Grant's picture

After the (yet again!) rip-roaring success of the last meeting in Chester, and following the agreed methodology of tracking around some of the north-west's more welcoming pubs, it was agreed that the next meeting would convene at the wonderful Philharmonic Pub in the Pool Of Life.
The question is...when?
I do humbly submit the following dates for rumination and for the checking against holiday plans, prostate fiddlage, vampire slaying agenda, etc.etc.
Again, a Friday night is mooted -
July 16th / 23rd/ 30th
I assumed that people would wish for another gathering, the sooner the better?
Let us know, hope to see you all again, and to any newbies - please do come along, we'd love to see you!

June 31st is good for me

but if I had to pick a date I would for early rather than late. Depends on anyone from the Liverpool Massive venturing forth. We don't bite honest.

0
Beany | 12 June 2010 - 10:19pm

June 31st

then, is also on the table..people okay with that date?

0
Grant | 12 June 2010 - 10:48pm

30 Days Hath September, April, June and November

Sorry, what day are we on ?

0
Doods | 12 June 2010 - 10:58pm

Good Point

Do you mean July 2nd, Beany?

0
Grant | 12 June 2010 - 11:33pm

If...

..England win their group, and then win their quarter-final, then by my ready-reckoner
( http://www.marca.com/deporte/futbol/mundial/sudafrica-2010/calendario-en...) I think they they are on for the evening game on the 2nd July.

0
Doods | 12 June 2010 - 11:47pm

After tonight

do you think that's a genuine concern?

0
Grant | 12 June 2010 - 11:50pm

This is a Scotsman talking, but

England often start slow. In 1986 then were terrible at first. And the USA are the second best team in the group. Probably.

0
Doods | 13 June 2010 - 1:06am

Took

You long enough to get it.

Geddit?

0
Beany | 13 June 2010 - 7:06pm

How is the 16th July for you?

As that's proving to be the most popular date en ce moment.

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 7:38pm

S'fine

As long as schools have not finished as we are having the grandpuppies to stay for a week - that's 4 dogs fighting and me refereeing (and loving it).

Are dogs allowed in The Phil? No tasteless jokes please...

0
Beany | 13 June 2010 - 10:42pm

It'll be the Friday

that many of them do break up.

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 11:53pm

July 16th

July 16th, being a friday, would work for me. Despite being based in the north-east, the GLW and I make the odd trip back to the motherland, and I dare say I could round up a posse to be in the Phil on that friday. Though, have you seen the Phil on a friday night? Bit manic. I would also respectfully suggest the Roscoe Head, Everyman, or the Belvedere.

0
AgentGraves | 12 June 2010 - 11:48pm

True

But we try to get in there early - 7pm.
The Everyman's not a bad call if you think the Phil's going to be a bit of a mare.

0
Grant | 12 June 2010 - 11:53pm

7pm ain't early

we kick off at 5 in Glass~gow, but then we are jodhpur wearing rapscallions!

am I allowed a LOL?

1
James Blast | 13 June 2010 - 12:41am

Not without

an otter...

0
nigelthebald | 13 June 2010 - 7:06am

Good work, gentlemen

0
Hannah | 23 June 2010 - 9:57am

We Southern Daisy-Pickers

Consider 7pm to be early enough, violin recitals, poetry readings and beating the manservant takes up a lot of time you know....

2
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 8:49am

LOL for Mr Blast

*inserts smiley*

0
el hombre malo | 13 June 2010 - 10:02am

Ahh, the Phil

I'd love to join you : it's one of my favourite Liverpool pubs.

But I'll either be in Glasgow or Islay at that point in the calendar.

I hope you all have a great time!

0
el hombre malo | 12 June 2010 - 11:57pm

ah bugger

'tis a shame. Hope to see you at some point!

0
Grant | 12 June 2010 - 11:59pm

Last time I was in The Phil..

..was just before Bryan Ferry played that place over the road, about five or six years ago. All dates work for me.

0
Prestonia | 12 June 2010 - 11:58pm

Good-O!

That's one for whateverdatewefix.
Anybody else got preferences?

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 12:01am

I can do

any Friday in July apart from the 30th.

I've set up one of those Doodle calendar things suggested by millymollymandy last time.

No need to sign in or volunteer any other info just click the dates brothers and sisters:

http://www.doodle.com/rrpmzakknxbqkdy5

1
Dr Volume | 13 June 2010 - 1:36am

Thanks for that

Very useful indeed. If everyone uses it then we'll sort it out in no time! I've been a bit cheeky and filled it in for some of the dates that the other kindly folk on this blog have ventured forth.
Apologies if I've been a bit presumptuous!

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 9:10am

Presumptuous.

Not at all, saved me doing it so thanks are in order me Hearty.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 13 June 2010 - 11:06am

Great pub

Best toilets ever! But I'm in Toronto ...

0
dai | 13 June 2010 - 1:37am

Helluva shot

from there, Dai!

1
nigelthebald | 13 June 2010 - 7:08am

Anytimeanyplaceanywhere.

Happy to don my dancing pumps and RAWK de joint.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 13 June 2010 - 8:03am

What Oh

I'love to meet the massive and can do 16th and 30th - away on the 23rd.

0
PaddyH | 13 June 2010 - 10:54am

Have put your dates into the calendar mentioned above

Whither the TKD Mart? MillyMollyMandy? Bisto? Vinell?

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 11:34am

From Vinnell

Cheers Grant - I'll check the dates and get back to you / the calendar soon

0
WholeHogg | 13 June 2010 - 1:36pm

If The Phil is too full....

...then can I suggest The Pilgrim just down the road Friday nights they have free music on Friday nights run by these guys http://www.myspace.com/rashrecordsuk - I would suggest its a Word friendly scene but as all the students will have gone I'm sure they could make it more Word Friendly.

0
Tony Donaghey | 13 June 2010 - 12:20pm

Will you be coming along Tony?

We'd love to see you there!

0
Grant | 13 June 2010 - 12:26pm

Depends on the date and cash.....

...cos although I have a Liverpool bands myspace - I live in Yorkshire
and can't get over as often as I like- also due to working permanent nights - but will try to get there.

0
Tony Donaghey | 13 June 2010 - 5:58pm

Liverpool Massive

Hi Guys Tony let me know you were comming down. For those who like their ale and music we put free live music on the Pilgrim (on pilgrim street 2 mins from the philharmonic) on Fridays, it would be nice to have you over, the ale is good and cheap, the company is good as is the music:-) We operate upstairs so are away from the hurly burley of the normal pub madness. Pete

0
Rashrecords | 14 June 2010 - 12:33am

Well, it would be churlish to refuse...

Thank you for the kind and generous offer. What does everyone else think?

0
Grant | 14 June 2010 - 7:02am

Sounds good like music to my ears.

Happy to go with the flow.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 14 June 2010 - 7:33am

Seconded

I used to live two doors down from The Pilgrim - great pub.

0
ceepee | 14 June 2010 - 3:24pm

Looks like a goer..

so shall we shift locations?

0
Grant | 14 June 2010 - 5:53pm

Don't see why not.

What does everyone else think? I think Hazyjane is away at the moment so it might take a bit of time for her to confirm or otherwise.Wither TKD Mart and Bisto? Are we settled on the 16th,It seems to be the favoured date so far according to the good doctor's calendar.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 14 June 2010 - 6:20pm

16th is fine too

Well, we could meet John Lennon endorsed Ye Cracke and then head into the Pilgrim. The War Room may be a wee bit too small for us, though. I'll also see if one of the magazine's Executive Editors could make the long trek from his city centre billet.

0
PaddyH | 14 June 2010 - 7:28pm

It's on the calendar

Just point me in the right direction.

Remind me what the theme was. Favourite chairs? Best bottle opener?

0
Beany | 14 June 2010 - 8:24pm

Sheep farming in Barnet

was the suggested thematic approach of the compilation.
Or, failing that...water...!

0
Grant | 14 June 2010 - 9:02pm

Doh!

I meant what are we supposed to bring with us.

I could bring a sheep if you want.

0
Beany | 14 June 2010 - 11:51pm

Sparkling,Still

or Tap?

0
Pencilsqueezer | 14 June 2010 - 9:37pm

Yep fine with me

The Pilgrim and Ye Cracke were old haunts in my Uni days, great pubs.
As terrific as The Pilgrim is, my only concern is that having a Live band in the room might not be entirely conducive to the Massive sharing the traditional succession of hoary old anecdotes, witty asides and general bonhomie (not to mention the passing around of Su Pollard 7" singles)

0
Dr Volume | 15 June 2010 - 12:08am

We can gravitate there

once we're quorate. Having not been there, I didn't realise we'd be sharing space with a band and have to compete with their volume.
So, back to the Phil? Ye Cracke?
What does everyone else think?

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 7:13am

I'll Check With Pete Who Runs The Nights...

..to see who he has booked - knowing him its last minute so there's always the possibility of a) making it a Word friendly act and b) book less than normal to allow for more chat. Pete himself has more stories than anyone else I've ever met not least about the other members of his own band - Colin the Peter Hammill nut or Steve who no matter wherever they go always just nips out to the Cashmachine.

0
Tony Donaghey | 15 June 2010 - 8:43am

Idoanydate.com

Yes any of those sound good to me, looking forward to a night out in the 'Pool.

*Note to self: must update knowledge on Springsteen, flanges and pirates before next do*

0
hazeyjane | 15 June 2010 - 10:30am

Please note

There will be a written exam on Stackridge.

0
Beany | 15 June 2010 - 4:27pm

Dammit!

I was trying to remember their name! Stackridge. Yes, will revise before our next meeting.

0
hazeyjane | 15 June 2010 - 10:22pm

You mean they actually exist ?

I thought they were our editor's imaginary friends.

0
Doods | 17 June 2010 - 8:40pm

Welcome

home.x

0
Pencilsqueezer | 15 June 2010 - 10:32am

Oops!

Have done the doodle date thing but not ticked the 16th July - this is also fine with me.

0
hazeyjane | 15 June 2010 - 10:37am

Can't do those dates

On holiday

0
Ahh_Bisto | 15 June 2010 - 5:00pm

So shall we settle on the 16th?

As it's the most popular date.

But...

Do people want music and chat, or straight chat (as per normal)?
We obviously have the exceptionally generous offer of the Pilgrim. Are folks happy with the Pilgrim and the possibility of live music or do you prefer the Philharmonic with no live music?

It's a stark choice, but these are stark times.

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 5:37pm

if you go to the Pilgrim

there's a danger you could turn into The Fuckwits*

* http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/some-fuckwits-and-crowded-house

:D

1
James Blast | 15 June 2010 - 6:34pm

Ah, the voice of sober reason

Becoming what we profess to hate? Have to give that the full-on bodyswerve then.
Thank you Mr Blast, for that reality check.

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 7:22pm

Me, sober?

how very dare you! LOL

being honest, I know at the two Glasgow meets we really run out of time for all our chinwags, s'pose it bodes well for many future gatherings

I'm sure you guys are the same

0
James Blast | 15 June 2010 - 8:39pm

To be honest

kind though the Pilgrim offer is, The ideal Massive night for me is a pub table with all you lovely lot round it talking about Genesis, Pirates and the Bass Player from Mansun. We're there to chew the fat are we not?

Someone said the Phil' gets a bit hammered on a Friday though? We've got a few weeks to decide.

0
Dr Volume | 15 June 2010 - 6:52pm

Have to agree

with you on all the above points, Dr V.

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 7:23pm

Totally agree that conversation should take precedence.

The question is where? Any help from the Liverpool chapter?

0
Pencilsqueezer | 15 June 2010 - 7:34pm

Conversation-friendly boozers

The Phil does get jammers of a Friday and we would need an advanced party to get one of the Smoke Rooms or one of the big tables at the back.
Ye Cracke is quite small, in the same (Hardman St/ Hope St) area I would recommend the Everyman Bistro - big long tables and good ale, The Fly in the Loaf (great ale) and there's also upstairs at FACT which is quietly buzzy with nice, if pricey, ale.
At the other end of town, Rigby's (an Okel's house like the Fly in the Loaf) would be big enough as would the wee Grapes in Mathew St (where it all began folks) and let's consider the peerless real ale haven that is the Ship & Mitre.

0
PaddyH | 15 June 2010 - 8:00pm

I Love Rigby's!

Great pub and a great selection of beers. Hates hoodies and scallies and justifiably tells them to Fuck Off. Everyman Bistro's also really nice!

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 10:10pm

I'm in!

At last, a Word meet up I can make.
On the subject of where to meet, I used to live in Liverpool and our favourite Friday night meet up was the Everyman - plenty of room, some big tables, good atmosphere and no loud music. Having said that, it's been 11 years since I left old Liverpool town so it may have changed. The Philharmonic and Pilgrim are both great places but the Everyman would get my vote.
And while I'm here, any fellow Mancs want to share a lift? PM me if you want to work something out. I'm happy to drive or passenge.

0
WholeHogg | 15 June 2010 - 8:04pm

Hurrah!

Our army grows..

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 10:14pm

It's been a long time since I last got It on In the 'pool

I know the Grapes,it used to be quite quiet when I used to sojourn there before a night out at Erics.Agree that the Phil might be a bit busy on a Friday night. The Everyman sounds cool and It has been mentioned more than once.So what does everyone think?
Anyone travelling from the Chester area?Fancy giving an impoverished Artist a lift?Share expenses,Tunnel & Petrol ect. E-Mail me if you're keen and kindly.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 15 June 2010 - 8:25pm

I'm there!!

Just tell me where and when

0
tkdmart | 15 June 2010 - 9:13pm

Good to hear

Looking forward to it already-it's looking like it's going to be our biggest gathering yet.
The Bistro at the Everyman sounds fine to me, as does Rigby's.

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 10:17pm

Looks like we got ourselves a

convoy! Or even a pub crawl...

I will be spending more time in Liverpool over the coming weeks and daughter 2 lives there. I'm not fussy (but you knew that anyway).

0
Beany | 15 June 2010 - 10:46pm

Decision time

How about we start at the Everyman and take it from there? There's plenty of pubs nearby if it doesn't work out.

0
WholeHogg | 15 June 2010 - 10:56pm

OK...but for the ladies

1
Beany | 15 June 2010 - 11:10pm

Nice!

Have an up - if I can get the darn thing to work

0
WholeHogg | 15 June 2010 - 11:15pm

Everyman then? 7pm? 16th July?

Is everyone happy with that?
Yep, we can convene there first, and once quorate, we can move on, but if we get comfortable we're a difficult bunch to move...
The Roadkill Club used to be nearby didn't it - saw Earth and SunnO)) there. Great, loud night.

0
Grant | 15 June 2010 - 11:33pm

Sound

La.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 16 June 2010 - 7:05am

Dat's boss

dat is.

0
Prestonia | 16 June 2010 - 9:48am

Fab

Gear

0
Dr Volume | 16 June 2010 - 2:29pm

Okay then...

We're locked.

0
Grant | 16 June 2010 - 11:26pm

All that remains is to get

Loaded.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 17 June 2010 - 9:59pm

Sounds wonderful..................

I'll be there on 16th - tell me again, its multiple copies of water themed tunes and some interesting vinyl - is that right? As one of the more irregular contributors it'll be excellent to meet up.

There's a wonderful crawl back into town with amongst others The Roscoe and (usually busy) Dispensary should that be the way the evening goes.

0
southstand | 17 June 2010 - 8:27pm

That's the plan

Ruthless planning and pruning of said platter continues apace, with "Comedy" Dave-esque convoluted links. (Or did. The World Cup is on, you know, so am falling behind with the homework...)

0
Doods | 17 June 2010 - 8:47pm

Another Newbie?

Hurrah! Soon, my children we will march south and you shall lay siege to Word Towers (laughs diabolically)..martyrs, of course to the freedom that I will provide...
Looking forward to meeting you Southstand!

0
Grant | 17 June 2010 - 9:41pm

Dear Dr Volume

0
Beany | 23 June 2010 - 9:08am

Looks nowt like me

he's a very ugly fat man with bad hair, unlike me and my chic looks which always dazzle.

0
Dr Volume | 24 June 2010 - 2:44am

Take it that's a no then

Made you look though! You'll be whistling that tune all day long now.

0
Beany | 24 June 2010 - 7:08am

Whew, there's a bullet dodged

no fear of the football getting in the way of the massive meet-up. Hurrah. Roll on the 16th. Looking forward to it already.

0
Grant | 27 June 2010 - 8:44pm

We still good ?

16th @ T'Everyman still fine by everyone ? No sudden glut of unexpected engagements ? Me, I aim to be on a train from Chester round the 5.30pm mark and to the venue before they run out of food.

And have we all been doing our homework ?

0
Doods | 3 July 2010 - 8:17pm

I believe that we are

I will post a final heads-up towards the end of this week / start of next weekend.
Am working on the mix as I type this-it's very hard to create a smooth flow-it's a bit jerky at the moment!

0
Grant | 4 July 2010 - 12:21am

Embrace your inner jerkiness

I am too busy lamenting the absence of stuff that missed the cut (bye-bye Al Green, Maurice & Mac, Blue Nile , Burning Spear, Jesus and Mary Chain...actually JAMC may have to go back in...). And wondering who has my copies of...

0
Doods | 4 July 2010 - 12:50am

The Maurice and Mac

track wasn't "You left the water running" was it?

0
Grant | 4 July 2010 - 1:21am

Er...possibly....

Not sure what else it could be...(says he, awaiting a rush of alternatives...)

0
Doods | 4 July 2010 - 1:31am

It's just that

I was going to put that track on my compilation.

0
Grant | 4 July 2010 - 9:03am

Fill your boots

I'm sure there will be some crossover in the Venn Diagram of the Massive's collection ; it would be surprising if there was none. But for me the M&M joins a mad list of great stuff which missed my cut.

0
Doods | 4 July 2010 - 9:21am

It is well and truly today's ear-worm.

and won't be shaken out any time soon. However, I am pre-empting...

0
Doods | 4 July 2010 - 11:48am

I'm afraid

I'll be doing no homework as I am not sure what it entails and whether I'm capable of the kind of tunes-based brilliance y'all are capable of.
I might however bring a battered 'Kiss This Thing Goodbye' limited edition picture disc in tribute to absent friend Dave Amitri.

0
PaddyH | 3 July 2010 - 11:58pm

Jerkiness.

Is exactly the overall effect I've been aiming for. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.By the way I may well be accompanied by Mrs Squeezer as I have been able to arrange for some respite care for the Aged P on the night in question. Both of us looking forward to the Booze n' Schmooze.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 4 July 2010 - 7:51am

What's the homework?

Sorry Sir but I didn't get the note off matron.
What are we supposed to bring?

0
WholeHogg | 7 July 2010 - 10:19pm

Keep up at the back!

As the last Massive meeting was in a delightful riverside setting it was suggested that we should each prepare a playlist along the lines of rivers, oceans, streams, tributaries, puddles and so forth. I'm sure various forms of artistic licence can be applied here to include anything vaguely connected to liquids.

Spotify playlist, mp3, CD, tape, DAT, 8 Track Cart...you choose.

0
Dr Volume | 8 July 2010 - 2:24am

Damn

I had chosen sheet music. Back to the drawing board...

0
Beany | 8 July 2010 - 7:22am

I was hoping for a Live performance Beany.

Is wax cylinder alright?

0
Pencilsqueezer | 8 July 2010 - 7:33am

Bistro has been contacted

A table has been booked from 7pm in my surname, Hobson -I asked for 10 (hopes are high) and will try to be there for 7pm. I was warned it may take some time, and the table may not be ready until 7.30, but after the RT fans move out, we should be okay.If anyone gets there earlier, feel free to use the surname to get the table.
See you then.

0
Grant | 12 July 2010 - 6:30pm

The NW Massive-mingling.

Or any excuse for a cheap laugh.
