Non-stop flights that...er...stop

More things that make you go "hmmm", of interest to anyone considering a flight to the USA. It seems that Continental have been cutting costs by using smaller planes (757s, since you ask), with less fuel capacity than the bigger boys. Most days it works. But sometimes the headwinds are too strong, they use too much fuel and have to make an unscheduled fuel stop. Not popular with the passengers who have connections to make.

Air travel
used to be a dream/treat, now it's worse than a bus ride across town.
I've no idea who's door to lay the blame at but I ain't using RyanAir ever again.
At least when the bus runs out of fuel ...
... it just stops.
Sheesh...
The first time I ever went to New York (1966, since you ask), I flew overnight on a student charter Bristol Britannia. The pilot came on the blower and said cheerfully, 'Well, we may have to stop in Gander for fuel or we may not, hard to tell, depends on the winds. If they're really bad we might have to stop in Reykjavik. We'll let you know.' He never did get back to us until 12 hours later, when he announced that we were about to land at JFK.
