Noel Gallagher's first single

Chimney Singing Cheryl Cole's picture

Only had one listen. It sounds like an Oasis B-side - which is pretty high praise. Needs Liam singing it, obviously

I stand behind no man

in my fondness for Mr G, but it felt all a little bit... obvious? Like a blueprint for The Importance Of Being Idle being followed too closely.

I think I'm done with Oasis and the Gallaghers now. Not that I'll never play them again; more that I just don't need or want any new from them.

Agreed

Definitely sounded like "The Importance Of Being Idle" Part 2. With horns. Oooh experimental! Ha. I think not.

I believe

there are two albums in the pipeline. One is "And this is me" Noel whilst the other is "These are some friends of mine with technology" Noel. The friends in the latter are Amorphous Androgynous.

Noel's a smart cookie. He's producing an album that will be attractive to the hardcore Oasis fan and an album that naive fools such as I believe he could produce if matched to a the right producer/technologists. I await my usual serving of mild disappointment.

I just don't need or want any new from them...

I felt that after the first two albums + the masterplan.

Where as Weller has gone

Balearic.

I quite like the Gallagher single but I need some one with more musical high ground to tell me why I'm wrong.

I've heard worse...

and here's Richie Havens' High Flying Bird.

I quite like it

He says the album doesn't sound like Oasis, but I'd agree that this is in the style of some of the later Oasis songs he sang ("Importance Of Being Idle", "Part Of The Queue" etc). If this was released in Oasis it sounds like it would have been one he'd sing anyway, so I wouldn't personally say it needs a different voice (I've always like Noel's voice anyway).

I like it.

Odd

I clicked on the video and thought 'the strings are a bit loud' and only when the vid ended did I realise that the music on top right had also been playing throughout (the strings bit). Oddly, it gave it a new depth even though it didn't quite work (natch).

Was OK. I didn't know Noel was a leftie.

That is poor

I like Oasis but that adds nothing new.

I would ask if rock is dead but based on previous posts I would be wrong!

Sounds like Noel's trying to outdo

his brother in the banal lyric stakes with rhymes that would make a five year old blush.

I love it

It's the best song of Noel's I've heard in years. Lyrically, he'll never be Bob Dylan, but he does know how to capture a mood with a few well chosen lines.

Hope he starts blogging again soon.

Oasis and Noel G

Always knowingly underwhelming since 1995. I also think Noel has a rather soppy singing voice - I suppose it's meant to be soulful. Shame. I rather liked them 16 years ago. Sorry, but opinions were invited. Yes it does sound just like The Importance Of Being Idle, with a touch of deep and meaningful, moody introspection - and that was a pretty blatant Kinks Kopy.

Sven Garlic | 25 July 2011 - 10:43pm

It has a real

Kinks or Small Faces feel to it. Transfer the video to a black and white shot British cafe and it sets you in mind of On The Buses or Steptoe. I think it's rather good.

The Small Faces?

Which song? I don't hear that at all, it does sound a bit like Dead End Street by The Kinks - as did The Importance Of Eric Idle. Prefer The Roller...at least it's fun with it's ridiculousness!

I picked up

Lazy Sunday Afternoon to be honest.

Dave Amitri | 25 July 2011 - 10:55pm

should have added

some percussive coconuts ....
unremarkably unremarkable...

drilltime | 25 July 2011 - 10:44pm

A bit average

but then I was never an Oasis fan. I do like the cd he compiled for this months MOJO though and would be interested in any album he does with Amorphous Androgynous.

The little riff

just before the parpy ending was the highlight. He should have used that as the basis rather than an old Oasis song.

More new Noel

Single no.2: AKA What A Life

There's also these two you can now hear:

If I Had A Gun

The Good Rebel

2
kidpresentable | 5 September 2011 - 8:02pm

That 3rd one, The Good Rebel

repeats the word 'Rain' over and over. It does this over a drum beat that sounds a bit like Rain by The Beatles. Why did he bottle out of actually calling it 'Rain'? He obviously thinks he's improving on the Fabs. Deludo-rock or Remedial-rock I can't decide.

This coming saturday 10th

Radio 2, 3pm - 6pm ... Noel's sitting in for Dermot wot's his face.

Not a fan of Noel's music but he is always worth listening to on the radio. Expect some interesting guests too.

0
niscum | 5 September 2011 - 8:12pm

Paul Weller

ceased to be interesting in 1983. A bit later if I was in a generous mood.

0
pompeygeorge | 5 September 2011 - 8:46pm

It really is...

...the most pedestrian load of old cock I've heard on the radio in some time. I just burst out laughing, I'm afraid.

If he weren't Noelly G, are we really saying that such a lumpen will-this-do effort would merit a record contract? I'm pretty sceptical.

1
Bob | 5 September 2011 - 8:50pm

Never a good sign

When you release four songs and they all sound exactly the same. 4/4 acoustic led band in an "indie rock" style seemingly in the same key.

Snooze...

0
badger_king | 6 September 2011 - 9:00am

Yeah.

Same goes for Ver Eye, although not acoustic, obviously. And what I say above is true of them too: if they weren't mostly former Oases, they wouldn't get signed. I'm certain of it.

0
Bob | 6 September 2011 - 9:12am

The tragedy of Beady Eye...

...is the wasted use of one of the great drummers, Chris Sharrock. When I heard them on Later... I was astounded at the ploddiness of it.
