New Year's Resolution
Posted by dai on 29 December 2010 - 8:08pm.
I am out of work and have been for some time. I spend way too much money on vinyl, CD boxsets and DVDs. I resolve to take 2011 off. I will buy nothing, but instead concentrate on consolidating my existing collection i.e. Selling and donating up to 50% of it. You can't take it with you.
Two questions:
- Could you do it?
- What should i order on amazon before midnight on Friday?
- More from dai.

You should order a big old external hard drive or network drive
And rip what you're selling. Choose a lossless format. Then at least you've always got a like-for-like digital copy of the originals, which you can play on your computer, stream to other devices in the house, or burn a CD copy if you need one in the future.
Don't worry about missing out on new music (you could always check things out on Spotify if available, and make a wishlist for your birthday or Christmas). Take the chance to rediscover some 'old'!
Oh, and if you're in a position to look for work - the very best of luck with that.
Thanks dg
I will be looking for work and your backup advice is already implemented (more or less). I will always love the music, it has become more about the owning and less about the listening.
I donated loads of cd's and books
to charity recently "Sense" and many other charity shops give you card which means your donation is giftaid (the same way a cash one would be) that means they get more for your stuff getting some of the tax back. Worth remembering
Cheers
I'm in Canada though, but there may be an equivalent here.
CD or not CD
I've just started selling off a big ol' chunk of my collection and am quite surprised how much I'm getting for certain items. I'm not exactly happy about it but the amount of unplayed albums I have here is ridiculous so they're going on Trade Me (a NZ version of Ebay).
In theory I'll be using the earnings to go towards a looming tax bill but I know deep down that they'll actually be spent on another guitar or even more CDs.
One thing I did do is buy as Drakey suggested an external hard-drive so at least I'll be able to listen to that Evie Sands album if I ever wish to do so.
Same here
Mines gone, didn't get much for it considering the size, but no hard feelings as I need the cash and there aren't many jobs out there so c'est la vie. [spookily on trademe - the same as mclongwhitecloud's comment above!]
It's strangely liberating. Of course I ripped them all to a 2TB hard drive in hi res and backed that up on another hard drive in a safe place, so it's really just the sleeve notes and the feeling you get when you put the disc in the machine.
Good luck with your job hunt.
Try this
