New Q

Am thinking of giving the new look Q a go. Having read it from the get go and stopping about a year ago (having given it far too long to see if it will get better) I am intrigued.

Has anyone tried it? Should I give it a go? I'm worried I'll start the habit up only to be disapointed.

Q why

nah.... don't bother. it doesn't seem to make any sense. lay out is all wrong, looks like it's been patched together in a hurry and is a bit of a jumbled mess.
and that's just the front cover.

Are you one of those chaps

...that nips into Smiths and other newsagents to rearrange the magazine displays so that The Word is more prominent that Q and Mojo. I would in your shoes and for a small "consultancy fee" we could be persuaded to do that job for you.

Beany | 2 October 2008 - 2:28pm

Everybody who works in mags does that.

I do it and I am not ashamed. It's war out there.

Andrew Harrison | 2 October 2008 - 2:44pm

Proud of you

for admitting it. Next time I see The Word in Asda, Tesco or Sainsbury's (I get around) I will do the same.

(LP winner - Ed.)

Beany | 2 October 2008 - 2:48pm

Moving Q and Mojo

in amongst the Woman's Interests magazines is a useful ploy too, I find.

Paul Vincent | 2 October 2008 - 2:55pm

the subtle way is to have a little read

and then put it back on the shelf with the back page at the front.

Lee Rimmer | 2 October 2008 - 2:59pm

Or

hide the free CD

Beany | 2 October 2008 - 3:05pm

In your pocket?

Perhaps.

Retropath2 | 3 October 2008 - 9:26am

Certainly not!

In the cabbages

Beany | 3 October 2008 - 10:06am

I used

to hide DVDs by the likes of Jim Davidson and Chubby Brown behind dar more worthy films, whenever I was shopping.
You have to do it for culture's sake

Paul Holmes | 13 October 2008 - 5:10pm

Aw, Honey,

I only read a copy of Q, it didn't MEAN anything... you know it's Word I love, don't'cha?

Paul Vincent | 2 October 2008 - 2:28pm

Bought it yesterday....

... and am working my way through it. AC/DC on the cover makes a change from the standard round of U2/Oasis/REM etc. No stupid lists (apart from a "10 Worst Superheroes" list, which looks suspiciously like something in a magazine we all know well... )

I think it's an improvement, but they won't be getting a subscription out of me, that's for sure.

frankandthetwins | 2 October 2008 - 1:18pm

in fairness

Q Charts were there yonks ago...

ivan | 2 October 2008 - 1:44pm

Also bought it yesterday...

... only had chance to skim through it but it seems a LOT better than when i'd last tried it. Funny thought did strike me though and that was that it felt a little like when I bought the first issue of Q; that here was something I haven't seen before. Not necessarily true but there you go.

grac | 2 October 2008 - 2:22pm

They'll be doing a Podcast next...

I'm sure of it.

Retro Man | 2 October 2008 - 3:38pm

There's loads of Q podcasts

There's loads of Q podcasts already - well, they say they're podcasts but as they're not two blokes talking over each other I don't think they count to they?

Andy Lynes | 3 October 2008 - 11:44am

Actually...

...I saw the new Q today and had to do a double-take when I saw Angus Young on the front and check that it wasn't the new Classic Rock. Hard to believe it was Q as a Gallagher brother/member of Coldplay wasn't on the front. Never read it, though!

JJ | 2 October 2008 - 5:07pm

I'll give the new Q three issues...

before they give in to temptation and put U2 on the cover.

Patrick Crowther | 2 October 2008 - 5:47pm

Nothing wrong with that Patrick

Is there?

Springer Bell | 2 October 2008 - 7:04pm

I suppose apart from the big

Yawn.

Springer Bell | 2 October 2008 - 7:05pm
Springer Bell | 2 October 2008 - 7:05pm

Only that...

they've been featured about 8 zillion times since the magazine's inception.

Patrick Crowther | 2 October 2008 - 7:14pm

Right I bought it

Looked alright on the shelf (no cd though) given that it had a grown man in a school uniform on the front. Its the hat that disturbs - there's nothing wrong with shorts.

First impressions - it looks different but pretty much reads the same. Tries to cover a wide variety of stuff but with no conviction. Who the hell is back. Not written by TH and I started to read it but it was like one of those TOTP album cover versions.

The layout actually makes it tricky to read - lots of font changes and caps for a paragraph. Busy background. And the paper feels cheap.

Didn't feel it introduced me to anything I didn't know. Will probably only buy it if I'm off on holiday or ill. My Word sub is perfectly safe.

So different but the same would sum it up - they have changed the things that I didn't mind and have kept the stuff that stopped me buying it. I feel suspicously like I'm not their target reader.

There's freedom of speech for you.

How many stars ?

In light of Handsome's recent thread - how many stars does the new Q deserve ?

chrisf | 3 October 2008 - 4:35pm

***

in honour of Mr Hepworth

Lee Rimmer | 3 October 2008 - 6:52pm

One other thing

Word turned up on Friday. Q has been untouched since. Nuff said.

Lee Rimmer | 6 October 2008 - 4:21pm

Q is hurting my eyes

Thought the new Q was in the main an improvement, but is it just me or has the typeface become a bit on the titchy side? I found in particular the bigger album reviews really hard to read unless I was sat under my spotlight with the magazine pressed against my nose, and my eyesight's not that bad.

Wyatt | 6 October 2008 - 8:15pm

I looked through the new Q in a newsagent yesterday...

and I have to say that it is appallingly designed (apart from the front cover, which is fantastic).

The design is just so fussy and over-complicated... this often happens when magazines have a relaunch. Instead of making the look of the pages more simple and clear, one ends up with a mish-mash of graphic elements that are all competing for attention.

I never got as far as seeing what the content was, as it just seemed too much of an effort.

Patrick Crowther | 7 October 2008 - 9:49am

Did you put it back

in the gardening section next to Lawnmower Monthlly?

Lee Rimmer | 7 October 2008 - 10:42am

It looks to me

like a magazine that's been designed to be flicked through rather than actually read in any great depth (rather like lads' mags at the barbers', which I flick through rather than actually read in any great depth).

I echo the comments about the small type size (with relief - I was worried it might just have been me), and I also dislike the very wide columns of text (almost full page width on the New Order back catalogue review), which I always thought were a design no-no.

PaddyB | 8 October 2008 - 12:55pm

I think it looks like Empire

I agree the text is quite small but the content is definitely improved.

My only real issue with it is the review of Power, Corruption & Lies which only gives 3 stars! An absolute disgrace...
