New Podcast Please!

Please Mr. Hepworth can we have a new podcast?

Life just feels so empty without them (well except the "Professor of Indie" one that is...)

I've tried the Collins & Herring one (just schoolboy swearing and sniggering), the Stephen Fry one (quite entertaining) and Adam & Joe (a bit smug but they are surprisingly good musicians) and no others come close to the Word Podcast in all it's Hepworth/Ellen/Hall glory!

We'll do one when I'm good and ready

Unless somebody cares to make me a cash offer.

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 1:49pm

We'll have a whip round

I'd be happy to stump up 50p

Handsome.P.Wonderful | 26 August 2008 - 1:51pm

Cash

Will £2.78 be okay, bit short until pay day.

David Wright | 26 August 2008 - 6:55pm

Well, I was driven to ask for one

so I'd gladly pay a subscription fee too.

Retro Man | 26 August 2008 - 2:05pm

Quite right too

I'll only listen in if Hepworth & Ellen sing a Sparks tune on the next podcast.

Beany | 26 August 2008 - 2:19pm

I disagree that "Collings and Herrin" is

"just schoolboy swearing and sniggering" - it's extremely funny schoolboy swearing and sniggering, but yes, I'd like another podcast too.

I've got 58p and a bit of lint.

Fraser M | 26 August 2008 - 2:22pm

We're thinking of running it like non-League football

"The match ball in this week's podcast is sponsored by Fred Smith of Stoke Poges."

Might be something in it.

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 2:27pm

There's a thought!

If it would help you out in times of economic crisis (I refuse to say credit crun...oh damn!).

Each episode could be sponsored by a Word Massive member, I quite fancy that - "today's Podcast is bought to you courtesy of Kitson"...

Seriously though, apart from your rather, quite frankly, hurtful reply to my original enquiry - when is the next one due?!

Retro Man | 26 August 2008 - 2:38pm

When is the next one due?

Seriously, I only just got back today and:

a) Word is going to press
b) Matt Hall is still on his Caribbean hideaway (or something)
c) I'm feeling bone idle

If I had to guess I'd say next week. You're not really hurt, are you? I'm not putting any of those bloody smiley things in, you know.

David Hepworth | 26 August 2008 - 3:22pm

Of course not...

I refuse to use those smileys too, but I admit it is damn hard to convey when one is joking without them sometimes.

Retro Man | 26 August 2008 - 3:27pm

Stephen Fry

His podgrams are as you'd expect - hugely entertaining. Especially the one about his hatred of dancing.

On the question of sponsorship, will you be coming round to our houses after the 6pm news accompanied by your Mum with a photocopied piece of A4 to put our names on with a lottery-biro asking for 10p a minute?

I suspect not but I'll give a you a fiver for the full 30 minutes worth if you do.

Andy Barrons | 26 August 2008 - 2:46pm

Yeah

That dancing one was terrible, I have no idea why he felt the need to go on so vociferously for so long about something he professes not to like. But generally they're great. There's only four that I can find on iTunes, or am I missing some others?

Niks | 26 August 2008 - 3:00pm

Just the four

That's all there is for the moment apparently.

Andy Barrons | 26 August 2008 - 3:10pm

Others to try

The Simon Mayo Radio 5 book and film podcasts are worth a listen. The book one has been 'off air' while the Olympics have been on but there may be some back copies available on iTunes or the Radio 5 site. Mayo & Kermode reviewing the films is always a joy to listen to.

I also enjoyed a series of philosophy podcasts by Nigel Warburton, called Philosophy: The Classics. Available via iTunes, or here: http://www.philclassics.libsyn.com/

Doesn't Mr Hepworth swear by the Grammar Girl podcasts too? Never tried them myself so no idea what they're like.

Finally, of course Collings & Herrin is "schoolboy swearing and sniggering": what else did you expect?! It's still a fun way to pass an hour.

David Ellcock | 26 August 2008 - 2:55pm

Don't know what I expected really

as I must have missed Richard Herring completely, not familiar with him at all.

I do like Andrew Collins as his books and columns are generally good reading, but I didn't think he came over that well on the podcast I heard and his voice was a bit irritating.
Anyway, I value the Word Massive's taste and opinion so I will give it another try and try to overcome my prudish behaviour!

Retro Man | 26 August 2008 - 3:45pm

Andrew Collins

Yes, some have a face for radio; Andrew Collins has a voice for magazines.

kb | 27 August 2008 - 3:30pm

Ow

Ow, ow. You people can be so cruel.

Andrew_Collins | 23 September 2008 - 2:34pm

Russell Brand

Russell Brand's podcast is the best thing on iTunes. I know it's a radio show as well but the podcast is much better because his taste in music is quite tedious at times and they cut all the songs out.

I love Adam and Jo's one, however Armstrong and Miller have just started doing one and it is unexpectedly awful.

Niks | 26 August 2008 - 3:04pm

Branded

It's a strange one with RB. I've always strongly disliked him on TV, but after a friend insisted I try his radio show my mind has been somewhat changed. I really enjoy the Podcast. I wonder though if it's largely down to Matt and Noel G.'s presence. In interviews and his TV presenting he's left to go off on one, but having other regulars on the show to shoot him down stops him getting to be too much.

kidpresentable | 27 August 2008 - 1:20pm

Agreed

He looks like a preening idiot on TV but he's brilliantly insightful and sharp on the radio. I think you're right about Matt Morgan, he's probably the only person who can take the mickey out of him to his face and get away with it.

Niks | 27 August 2008 - 2:24pm

The Bugle

Try The Bugle. It's really good - knocks the Now Show into a cocked hat.
Literally never a dull moment in 40-odd episodes so far. Andy Saltzman has an unending supply of surrealist claptrap.

(I don't work for, or even read, The Times)

Simon Moffatt | 26 August 2008 - 3:55pm

Cheers for the recomendation

I have sampled it and it's great. Not quite as good as the Now Show I think but nevertheless very entertaining.

Niks | 29 August 2008 - 3:05pm

Not funny

I didn't find C&H funny at all. Slurping ice lolly (hahahahaha) into mic and taking about cocks (hahahahahaha) not my bag at all.

Twangothan | 28 August 2008 - 3:16am

Until Hepworth and Ellen return...

...you could try digging out some old footage of Saint and Greavesie.
The effect would probably be quite similar.

Roy Levy | 2 September 2008 - 6:17am

That takes me back...

to pre-Sky/Hornby/Damon Albarn pretending to support Chelsea footie! Anyway, who would be Saint and who would be Greavesie?

Retro Man | 2 September 2008 - 8:20am

Ah yes...

...The Big Match on a Sunday afternoon, Brian Moore, footy in the park, duffle bags for goalposts. Not a billionaire owner in sight. Nurse !

Roy Levy | 3 September 2008 - 7:04am
