New music Friday

John Connolly's picture

It's Friday and I have a few bob to spend on iTunes but don't know what to spend it on..

So, simple question - what's the best new thing you've heard lately?

Apart from the SIlver Seas which is flashing away on this screen as I type. Something else!

Any good suggestions out there? The winner earns a hearty thank you!

Beirut

The Rip Tide is jolly good.

Grassoline

"My Mountain, My Grave" - from the Mountain and Grave EP. Whole EP is good.

Saw this lady live this week.

St Vincent. Best gig i've seen in ages. Fantastic voice and an absolutely fantastic guitarist.(Which i wasn't expecting.) Her album 'Strange Mercy' is one of the years best.

Not saying you are wrong

but that same artist lives in my memory as the absolutley worst professional musician that I've ever seen live. And I've seen some shockingly bad bands.

Well she's uped her game

Because she and her band where absolutely fantastic.

MrSib | 18 November 2011 - 1:40pm

'twas all loops when I saw her

so it took 15 minutes to create a 3 minute song. So having a band would probably help. A lot.

It Mightn't Be Fair

...if my niggling concern about the Kate Bush is that it lacks some of her past eccentricity, I find this record offers it in abundance. I may approach the live recording with some trepidation, however.

Everything Everything

Schooling - wonderful. And I suspect their name comes from 'Cowgirl' by Underworld which makes me like them even more.

My daughters play the Alex Turner 'Submarine' EP - he of Les Singes Arctique - really good too.

iTunes?

What a quaint old concept.

Isn't it about the same price to buy the CD?

(Tom Waits or The Antlers)

Amazon downloads are where it's at.

Much, much, much cheaper than itunes and those old round things.

The Hawk in Paris

Save yourself a few bob and get a few songs by The Hawk in Paris from Noisetrade - free and legal - I dont think all seven of their songs are on Noisetrade but any that are not there you can find on iTunes.
Certainly worth a listen,

For something lovely and

For something lovely and soothing - Lanterns On The Lake (songs starts a minute into the vid)

or for something a bit more, um, jolly - Veronica Falls

They are very good

both EPs and the new album are excellent and they kick-arse live. Well in a sort of floaty dreamy fuzed up guitar way they kick-arse..

Have yet to see them live as

Have yet to see them live as I only discovered them myself recently but hope to see them in January. The EP's are wonderful but the album seems to have all the best tunes in the first half. It's all on Spotify if you want to check them out :)

Another 'Up' for Lanterns...

The album is wonderful.

I'll also chip in with this, the new album from Jon Allen. Nothing groundbreaking about this, just great songs, sung well and played well and if that's what you're in the mood for this hits the spot.
Jon Allen 'Joanna'

Or, if you're in the mood for something a little more 'out there' have a gander at this.
The War On Drugs 'Baby Missiles' - from the wonderful album 'Slave Ambient'

Or, you could do worse than the new ones by Ryan Adams, which is a real return to consistency & the new Wilco, plus Bon Iver, Josh Rouse and Megafaun by Megafaun

Robert Francis

Before Nightfall. Not been picked up by many but it's very, very good. Lots of influences but Jeff Buckley & Ryan Adams spring to mind.

Tom Waits seconded

(New album is Bad As Me.)

Next purchase for me is likely to be the Rifles - can anyone recommend it?

jah wobble and julie campbell - psychic life

Haven't really heard much of his stuff for for a few years but a friend interviewed him for emusic and it caught my eye.
Haven't listened to anything else all week - she's got a great voice, the bass and drums are peerlessly groovy in places and keith levene chucks in a couple of great guitar lines in too.
And I can actually imagine dancing to most of it.
Not that I ever actually dance, of course.
