Entertainment For Lively Minds
New issue of The Word - OUT TODAY!
After their agents insisted they take a break for the summer, Kate Mossman and Mark Ellen return with what may well be the greatest introductory video to a new issue of The Word magazine yet. Minutes in the making, this epic is now ready for viewer consumption. We hope you enjoy it.
Also in this issue: Laura Marling, Ben Folds & Nick Hornby, the Best & Worst doctors in entertainment, Tom Ravenscroft, Tim Robbins, Ray Manzarak, Martina Topley-Bird, Ian Rankin, Annie Nightingale, Peter Sellers, Robert Sandall, Mexico's drug wars, the live music boom, and Mark Hodkinson.
And that's not all: our free, 15-track CD featuring the best new music of September 2010, including tracks from Los Lobos, Richard Ashcroft, Chris Difford, Eels, Josh Ritter, Bull Kirchen feat. Elvis Costello, Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse, and many more...

I'm sure I'll enjoy it
when it reaches Cincinnati about September 29th...
Are you serious?
It shouldn't take anything like that. US copies should be with American subscribers within nine days from the on-sale date, at the latest.
Fraser
I stand ashamed to admit that I am not a subscriber, but pick up The Word at my local newstand. The August issue showed up there last week, I sat down to enjoy it Monday night as I put the kids to bed. It's a long wait, but worth it to enjoy this fine publication.
You had been doing so well recently
but this month it's a return to the race to see if my subscription copy hits the mat before it arrives on the shelves of WH Smiths in Belfast. It's not a ploy to make me buy two copies is it?
I'm with you Steve...
...it hasn't reached doormats in BT4 yet either. Which is unusual - they'd been doing so well the past few months... Subscriber hotline girl said, 'But its only out today - give it till Monday'. I wondered if I should gently say something about subsciber copies being supposed to arrive a little earlier. But nobody's died. Calmness prevailed. Stuff happens. etc etc
As to why the police weren't moving on a load of clowns with placards blocking the lower Newtownards Road at rush hour tonight, though - well, that's different...
You are quite literally with me ...
as I too am crouched expectantly behind a letter box in BT4. Next thing you know we'll be organising a Massive meet in Horatio Todds.
Word
is worth waiting for
"a Massive meet in Horatio Todds..."
...except we'd never get a table...
Actually, my next door neighbour is a subscriber too. small world, etc etc...
OK then
all round to his place.
Saturday 14th and still no Word
I do not want to know if anyone else in BT4 has received their copy, and I shall mostly be steering clear of newsagents for the rest of the day.
wowzers...
it'd landed in Roscommon on Thursday...
No, Steve, me neither...
...looks like Word has been taken over by an education board HR department: useless obfuscatory b******ds who'll dig their heels in and tell you that the moon was in venus the month you signed your subscription and therefore you have no right to this particular issue and no, because of some vague auditing bollocks they can't possibly change that arrangement, refund your money or do anything to help you in a normal and humane way.
But maybe it'll arrive on Monday. Who knows.
You guys should move to Finaghy
Mine arrived on Wed 11th.
WTF etc.
Finaghy gets deliveries before the rest of Belfast? If it's not on the mat when I get home I'll ... well I'll ... I'll ... probably have to wait until at least Tuesday.
P.S. Ian you should keep up with your Twitter account. Never let it be said I didn't try!
Stephen....
...I am officially a ballix. I blame the three kids, and the fact that I failed two of the three exams I was doing in May. I'm back at the books, and something (in this case Twitter) had to give. We will get it together eventually!!!!
Josh Titter
Is there really someone called Josh Titter? Or did you mean Josh Ritter?
Titter Ye Not
yes you! you know who you are
That's it love, get your titters out
Must be Josh Ritter. He'll be sueing.
this is prob another topic now
but a Word meet-up in Horatio Todd's would be class. One of the few bars in the East where sportwear is not compulsory
6 months in
to a subscription and the mag arrived before the pub date! For an overseas subbie, I'm impressed!
Just arrived in Sydney
16th August. Much faster than last time I think
So I'm hopeful ...
... that mine will be in the box when I get home (in Brisbane) tonight.
Got mine in Sydney yesterday
Wasn't expecting it for a few days yet! Well done!
... and successful
I was right, there it was in the box when I got home. I couldn't bear to have to wait an extra month for a newsagent's copy.
Well, last month's hasn't
Well, last month's hasn't arrived in the Cayman Islands yet, so I don't expect to see this issue until well into September.
Just wanted to note
that Mark Ellen shares another link with Harry Hill, namely Andrew Collins, who did an early Edinburgh show with the pre-HH Matthew Hall .
Tuesday 17th August
and still no sign of subscription deliveries in BT4. The nice lady at Word Towers has however promised to send me a copy today. Please try harder next month.
I am imagining a rock star micro universe...
in which the mouse-sized Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Neil Young parp away using gob irons on necklaces. Van's still tastes a bit pungent on occasion...
New Zealand
Copy arrived today (Aug 18). Thanks very much.
It was hand delivered by my local postman who engaged me in an early morning conversation about the merits of Richard Thompson. He seems like a decent guy (posty rather than Thompson - who I have never met) so he's coming over for coffee and a longer chat later in the week.
This never happened while I lived in London.
Ooh, now I'm excited
I was just thinking that I hadn't checked the post today (Aug 19) and that just maybe my copy would have arrived!
Just off down to the mailbox now...
Nope, nada
I guess it just takes a few days longer to reach deepest, darkest Dunedin!
I have dropped a hint with my GLW (birthday)
So I am hoping to join the NZ contingent of the subscribing Massive soon. Good to hear that the mag gets here relatively quickly. Do we get the CDs? Or is that just the UK?
We get the CDs too
I wondered about that at first - I remember back in my NME-reading days that there was always a message under their cover-mounted cassettes saying something along the lines of "For copyright reasons, the free tape is not available outside the UK". However, the Word bods seem to have cut a worldwide deal in relation to the NHT! CDs, so all is good!
Thanks Merv
That's good to hear.
Turns out it DID arrive yesterday
It was just that the FPO had checked the post on her way out of the house this morning and taken it with her!
Any truth in the rumour that the lovely Kate Mossman....
.... is wearing one of these in this clip?
No, no
that wise old sage with the odd hair is... oh, fill the rest in yourself.
I'm perplexed by the small droid visible in the garden, between Kate and Mark in the still above. Does Word have robot staff?
...
That's not the droid you're looking for.
At the risk of coming over all Lynne Truss
You seem to have flipped one of the Rolling Stones pictures into a mirror image. For some reason this annoys me to near apostrophe levels.
Anyone else in BT4 not received a subscription copy yet?
Or am I being singled out for some reason, given that neither the original or promised replacement have arrived? Anyone? Hello? Anyone there?
Sorry for tardiness, there, Steve...
...just checked back into this thread. And the answer to your question is... NO! My copy didn't arrive/hasn't arrived either in BT4. I bought a shop copy on Monday 16th and rang Word Towers suggesting an extra issue be put on my sub (subs lady had said 'give it to Monday' the week before).
Haven't checked with my next door neighbour yet (also a subs man) but already it takes no Sherlock to deduce that there may be a bit of Post Office crappiness in the BT4 area...
I mean, Finaghy.... FINAGHY???!!!????
:-D
Ah,
....'tis Gods country, Finaghy. The beers cheaper over here and all.
Probably.
Friday 8th October. Morning Star. 7.30pm?
*crickets*
( geddit ? )
Agents?
Wot, journalists have agents nowadays? Blimey, writing for a mag must be more showbiz than I realised!
Great issue though, folks. Particularly enjoyed the piece about impecunious old rock stars. Very reminiscent of the way folks assume because they've read a book by an author, said author must be as wealthy as Croesus.
"said author must be as wealthy as Croesus"
...well, speaking personally, at the very bottom of the authorly pile, trust me: Croesus is so far away I can barely make out the glint of his golden chariot on a cloud-free sunny day...
The 4th Peter Gabriel album
will never look the same again.
And
topical!
Is it inappropriate...
for me to interject at this point and declare my love for Kate Mossman?
Not as long
as you realise you're joining a very long queue. At the end.
