New Issue lands on the doormat
Posted by Humphrey Plugg on 8 August 2011 - 10:44am.
It has Amy Winehouse on the cover, Blondie on the CD, some very dodgy pictures of our editorial team proving that no-one looked good in the 80s, and a very easy to spot "99% true" (Am I the only person who always starts there - just like going to the sports pages in a newspaper).
As for the rest - well, it only arrived 15 minutes ago, I can't read that fast!!

Amy Winehouse on the cover.?...
Glad to see The Word isn't cashing in on her untimely death then.
Awful, isn't it?
All the newspapers cashed in on it the day after she died, too. Vultures.
It's not like you to be cynical
Yeah, fair enough...
It's just fun to poke the hornet's nest sometimes.
Anyway,I'm pissed off as it's my birthday and I'm getting old.
Happy birthday!
Cheers...
48 now, pleased to get among other things the new Luke Haines book. Hope it's as cynical as the first and I am.
Getting old
beats the alternative.
I'm glad to see her on the cover
Any other choice would have been pretty odd, IMHO.
Disagree
I have always really liked the fact that Word has an obituaries section, and the 'hold the front page' attitude that they take when a musician that they admire passes on.
Was it selling out with Peel, John Martyn or Captain Beefheart? They may well have seen a sales increase because of the commemorative value of those issues. If the piece is good (and it may well be better and more musically focused that pieces from other parts of the media), then I have no problem at all.
And as a long standing member of the 'finding Winehouse attractive' club, it's a beautiful cover.
So where do you start?
I usually start with the Home Service feature followed by Word of Mouth.
Really looking forward to reading the feature on EMI over lunch. Having had some past dealings with Guy Hands I can't imagine he will come out well from the article.
Me too, I have a lot of
Me too, I have a lot of dealings with the firm...
Myself I usually start with best/ worst then head into any articles I'm excited about
What?
You mean you don't start at Page 1 and read it cover to cover, in sequence? I'm deeply shocked, to my core.
Ditto starting with 99% True
although today I didn't have it that easy. Reggae's not my strongest subject.
The vanderlay household....
Have all given the cover full approval.
The bag will remain sealed however on this one until the 22nd when, beer in hand, I read it on the plane going to Portugal. Can't f*ckin wait!!!
But clearly ...
... you can : - ).
Lovely tribute
It's a beautiful picture of Amy W, and Paul Du Noyer's piece does absolutely the right thing in placing the focus on her talent, without brushing the Other Stuff under the carpet. If, as I do, you believe that, musically speaking, Amy mattered, you couldn't have any complaints. Even if you don't rate her, it'd be a churlish heart to carp at this editorial decision. Great choice of her best songs too, although I was never crazy about Valerie. I'd have chosen In My Bed from the first album.
Dead Dido
No wishing her a sudden death, but I think we can rest assured that Dido won't be on the front cover of The Word, when she meets her maker!
Photo cover
Am I the only one who really really prefers photos on the cover instead of artwork (however well done)? Not speaking as an Amy fan, I'd trade this month's cover for all the rest of this year.
Me!
Yep, a good photo does it for me every time.
Me as well Douglas
Much better in my opinion and particularly the layout on this one, simple and classy
Yup
me too. And I want my spine back too!
Hats off to Team Word for...
...getting Peter Doggett in for a column. Several of us asked, after the Doggcast, and our wish was granted! Hopefully he'll be an occasional regular (if that isn't an oxymoron) at least!
I've read some pieces already and the whole thing looks like an absolute classic issue - and, bloody hell, I've even listened to (and quite enjoyed) the cover CD this time...
After the 'wobble' of Hepgate in the last issue, we're back on track! Not an Estonian or a PR junket in sight, but instead a really delightful, measured and insightful memoir from the Hep on his time at Whistle Test.
A quick glance reveals
a lot of Paul Du Noyer in the new issue. That is a good thing. He attended an early Massive mingle in Liverpool and is a flipping nice fellow.
Holiday reading
Trying to save it for hols at the end of the month- so haven't unwrapped it yet. Sounds like I have something to look forward to.
Could do with a couple more podcasts for poolside listening too.
Ooh! Ooh!
That picture of the Ramones at Erics on page 56? I was there! If that bloke behind the bloke in the Adidas shirt had his arm down you'd see me. And Julie Burchill, who kept treading on my foot...
Photographer
knew what he was doing then Mark?
Sorry couldn't resist. Hope all's well with you
Can see Croydon burn...
...from bedroom window...No 1 son's girlfriend lives closer than us so a bit tense..
Stay safe
I'm so glad my eldest lad found a job up here after graduating. The London conversation was scary enough on financial terms without all this.
