New iPhone User Requires New Apps
Posted by kinkywolfgang on 7 February 2010 - 9:51am.
I've got Spotify on there plus not much else - just the usual stuff that comes with it such as Stocks, Weather, Compass.
C'mon, gang. Point me in the direction of some more interesting stuff for my new iPhone!

some of my favourites
The Guardian - easy to use, clear to read
Wolfgang's Vault - free streaming concerts from a huge range of artists. It's great. (Free registration)

Whether you want the Fabulous Poodles or the Fabulous Thunderbirds, chances are you will find them!
Eucaplytpus - a book reader - is also good. I've read P.G. Wodehouse My Man Jeeves, some Burns, and some Byron.
and some more recommendations from an earlier discussion are all here :

I like
Doodle Jump - silly but great game.
Scrabble
Sky Sports Live for the football updates
mSecure for password storage
Remote is cool as well - puts you in charge of you iTunes when your not at your pc.
Newspapers and office apps
The Independent and Telegraph apps are much used by me and free (I'll probably get the paid for guardian one too).
I spent ages trying to work out which was the best office suite to use and am glad I settled on the easy to use DataViz one - it opens Word and Excel files quite fast and I use it for all my general notes (I prefer using text files to using a dedicated to-do app. It also opens pdfs with ease - very handy for manuals (camera, satnav etc). As it does so much it's probably my most used application.
My favourites
AroundMe - gets your position thru GPS then gives you a categorised list of pubs, restaurants, shops, hotels etc near you
Logitech Remote Mouse - use your iPhone as a PC mouse
Technobox - 808/909 and 303 on the iPhone (one for dance music lovers)
Gorillacam - useful camera tools - zoom, press anywhere shutter etc.
MotionX GPS - I walk a lot, and this allows me to record my walk route and timings and plot on a map, and save favourite routes.
Wikipedia Mobile - does what it says.
Slightly off-topic but...
I have a 3G iPhone which, for some reason, fails to pick up any wi fi signals at all, anywhere - at home, out and about. The only internet access it provides me with comes from the comically-priced 3G data allowance (It's T-Mobile in Germany). All apps and roaming is therefore impossible - I was unaware of the cost of using this til my last phone bill (EUR700!)
Anyone else experienced this? i have tried restarting, resetting, re bloody everything to this bally machine, but no joy. Any tips much appreciated, thanks
iPhone angst too
Yes, I am having a fretful time with my new iPhone. It won't sync with the PC, won't connect to our home wi-fi, which means I can't use its iTunes functions at all.
Granted, our home PC is a crap old Dell that we got out of the skip from my wife's office clear up, but the wi-fi thing is really rubbish.
Sounds broken
It sounds like it's not working. My ipod touch works better than any other portable device that I've ever had for wi-fi. Is it just your router you have a problem with? Have you tried connecting to any public wi-fi hotspots? Even without an account lots of the public ones are open and allow you to connect first then log in via the browser.
WiFiFoFum
Is a 'sniffer' application that I found very handy at home to locate where there was a strong and weak signal
I'd do a soft reset just to be sure there isnt a handset problem - but certainly Ive had no problems with the wifi function
Apple Store ?
A couple of questions, because it sounds like your iPhone is (as we say here) burst.
Is there an Apple Store near you ? The "genius bar" are very helpful people.
Does your PC meet the minimum spec for iTunes ?
Yep - Apple Store...
I think that if you can install the latest iTunes then you should be able to use all it's facilities, if there's a function that won't work (eg Notes on the OSX lower than leopard) then iTunes will tell you when you want to use it rather than just not working.
Probably not working
I assume that you've switched on the Wi-fi option. It may not be enabled out of the box and reseting the phone won't help that. If it is switched on, if you put it within a metre of a router (with SSID viewable) you should see that router on the phone. If you can't then there's something wrong with the phone and it needs to go back. Can you download any wi-fi sniffing applications? That might also help know what's working and what's not.
I got my iphone last June and for a while, it was fine
But in recent months, it just doesn't recognise any wi fi networks at all. Its sitting next to my laptop now, staring blankly back at me. I toggle the wi fi settings, enter names of networks, wave it hopefully at the router, sing to it, iron its bloody underwear but nothing.
Its latest wheeze is suddenly refusing to recognise random numbers in my contacts book. I was trying to call a friend yesterday, phone was having none of it, emitting a sad trio of beeps before cancelling the call. A call on the landline confirmed friends number was operation and within range. All very strange. Yet random other numbers are fine.
I did fine for years with a humble Sony Ericsson mobile, this iphone's a real (and very expensive) disappointment.
If it's in warranty I would
If it's in warranty I would get it looked at.
This is probably a silly question...
... but did you go into "Settings" and turn wi-fi on?
Shazam
Enables you to identify any track that you hear playing and works on the most obscure stuff
Also like Toodledoo - a task manager that synchronises with Outlook via a web 'cloud' - allows the phone to be a memo pad that synchronises with your desktop
ECB cricket - is free and provides a very clear way to update on test matches in particular
National Rail - expensive but very handy (particularly during the recent snow)- updates in real time to see all train times and route options
London Tube - same thing for Tube
Thank you all so much
These are all very helpful and thoughtful comments. What a lovely bunch of people you are. I also have a superb iPod Touch that is great on wifi. Just can't explain any of this. Cheers, will seek professional help tomorrow.
7 year olds are so great
With the help of my 7 year old son the wifi is now working. "It needs to be capitals, Dad." Still can't be seen on iTunes, but at least I can download a few podcasts for the commuting this week.
Tvcatchup
Althought not an app if you go to the tvcatchup website and click on the iPhone link you can sign up for streaming television. Just add the link to your homepage.
It seems legit although I don't know how. Anyone know anything about it?
Works well on 3G and wifi. They do a radio version too.
Probably best only using it when connected to wifi as I'm sure it would ride roughshod over any 3G download fair use policy.
If you use iTunes...
... and your computer has wi-fi capability, get Apple's Remote app. Turns your phone into a wireless remote control. Fantastic!
Thanks!
The above are much appreciated. I'm getting into this iPhone lark now, after a decidedly shaky start.
If there are any more groovy apps that The Massive are aware of, please post them below...
Thanks again, Wolfgang.
