New Country discoveries

Niks's picture

Yesterday, thanks to Whisperin' Bob Harris, I was completely bowled over by a track from soulful bluegrass bunch The Steeldrivers. Checking them out this morning on MySpace I was bowled over once again, they really are damn fine. Listen for yourself.

Also recently, possibly via this blog I can't remember, I discovered Malcolm Holcombe and his great album Gamblin' House - gritty, gruff voiced string band delightfulness. Somewhere between Rod Stewart and Tom Waits singing Steve Earle songs on a battered old acoustic guitar with his drunken mates on fiddle and banjo.

Another recent find - thanks again Radio 2, Mark Lamarr this time - is the beautiful Eilen Jewell. Not that new and I'm sure I'm a bit of a Johnny come lately but her album Letters From Saints and Stranglers is filling a Honky tonk Gillian Welch shaped hole in my life currently.

Anyone else got any new recomendations from the world of country music? I'de love to hear them.

Bob Harris sessions

You may have discovered Malcolm Holcombe through Bob as he did a live session a few weeks ago.
Eilen Jewell did a session for Bob last year.
As for Gillian Welch, it's about time she put a new album out. Soul Journey came out in 2003 and nothing since. I know she's gigging, although not over here. Maybe she really has taken the sentiment of Everything Is Free to heart and decided to quit recording.
Sorry, I doubt if I have any recommendations in country that you won't have heard. Unless you don't know Elizabeth Cook.

With apologies…

… but I've been a member of this community for over a year without ever plugging my band The Redlands Palomino Co, so I'm gonna do it now! We're not 'alt country'; we're not 'Americana'… we're country rock and proud of it. (NB we did a Bob Harris Country session way back in '07, too).

Nice

Are you Drive by Truckers fans? Have to say I prefer it when the girl is singing though.
If you ever play Cambridge I'll try and get along.

I find my new country raves......

....from a number of blogs across the pond. I was intrigued and pleased to see the good reviews for Andrew Bird and M Ward alongside in the last issue, as they have been extensively blog-hyped for some time (allowing that they are not country, per se)and I have been enjoying certainly mr bird for some time.
New acts to follow up on might be: the Avett Brothers, Chatham County Line, Old Crow Medicine Show and Crooked Still, none of whom, esp OCMS, who have been around for yonks, are all that new. They all, in slightly differennt ways, affect old timey styles and instrumentation to platy vital exciting stuff. Shades of Gillian Welch too...

Thanks

I downloaded The Avett Brothers mini album The Second Gleam over the weekend and it is beautiful, a really great find.

Ain't it great!

I caught that from e music about 4/52 ago, having seen them crop up in blog after blog, with one or two tracks to entice.
