Never mind Wogan, Adam & Joe are going on indefinite hiatus

DrJ's picture

Did anybody else hear this announcement last week? Tomorrow is the last live A&J show on 6Music for the time being. Joe is going off to direct a movie - his intentions have always seemed elsewhere whereas Adam is quite happy to chittle-chottle on a Saturday morning and make up silly songs and voices on a whim. Hollywood is slowly pulling Joe away - he's already co-written the upcoming Speilberg-Jackson Tintin movie, which in fairness might have more appeal than another round of Song Wars. On the show, Buckules seemed really upset about it all.

They have said that their 6music blog will remain and that they intend to come back at some point, but it's all very vague.

Stephen! *sobs*

Drat. There go my Saturday mornings.

But what shall become of Boggins?

Still, I guess everything has a shelf life. I felt bad when SM:TV left the air too. Ah, how fondly I remember the Pokemon breaks.

I listened to their podcast

all the way over here in Houston....and now that I am returning to the UK, they are going on a break.

Many a time I would be out running and would have to stop as I was laughing so much.

Hmmmm

Just coming!

maybe, but will take a while

Without Dr Sexy and Dr Buckles the digital radio will be of no use to me. Althou Richard Hawley on Lauren's show this week was blinding.

First Wogan (never listen), then Mayo (e's good) and now A&J. Its gonna be lonely this Xmas..........

*Psst you always indulge in teh past shows as archived here*

Looking on the bright side

...at least it means that the Word podcast will now become my favourite podcast. It'll be sad to see them go but it teaches us an important lesson. I suppose.

Oddly

having been away in another country of which I knew little for most of November I came back to a stack of A&J podcasts. I have long been a fan and was even more of a fan when they read out my apopriation email regarding Goatgirl and Bobo the cat on GG's 40th birthday. But thats irrelevant.

However, something seemed wrong. There was a weird tension in the air. The happy banter seemed oddly forced. I feared, I tell you reader, for them.

And now this!

Surely this can't be true? Please say it ain't so!

Why am I strangely unsurprised?

Well, if you're a close A&J

Well, if you're a close A&J watcher there has long been that divide between the two of them. Essentially Adam is quite happy with being a performer and broadcaster, while with Joe it has always seemed to be a means to an end. Adam always seems a bit more prepared and sincere about the whole enterprise, Joe used to do that thing where he'd torpedo Adam's stories  Just look at the jingles, they're all by Adam, except for the Retro Text The Nation jingle (although that is the best one as any fule kno'!)

I've seen Buxton solo doing his Bug show at the NFT, and it's a blast. He's a funny, talented guy  Also his MeeBox pilot that went out on BBC Three was a post-YouTube reimagining of the original A&J Show. Too good for BBC3, he should bring comedy to the humour-starved BBC4.

Joe has been writing with Edgar Wright for a while, so as well as the Tintin script they've been working on an adaptation of Antman for a while - I assume that's why Joe was intermittently in America last year and replaced by Garth Jennings, (who was great) and why they took a summer break this year.

So Joe seems to building his movie career and if he has to choose, it's going to take precedence. When they were announcing the hiatus I thought that Adam's statement of "I really love doing this show" was quite telling and touching. I hope they're back soon.

Pity: I only recently

Pity: I only recently discovered their podcasts, which have been a splendid, very entertaining accompaniment to long slogs on my road-bike. Oh well, I'll have to check out the link posted above (thanks!) and see if I can download old podcasts.

Bummer. Oh, and I'm in the pro-Boggins camp.

Shame

Devastating news. A&J is a weekly highlight. But yeah, Joe has seemed distracted of late.

By all accounts his script is supposed to be pretty good, so we'll see how he goes with that. However, if it doesn't feature stop-motioned Star Wars figures, including a drunken Ben Kenobi, I fear he will have missed a trick...

I hope there's a tight budget/filming schedule, so they're back sharpish.

Oh, that’s just great!

I’ve listened to A&J’s Podcast since 10/03 – Each time I heard it, it got a bit better!
They both have a truly unique quality about them, that I very much enjoy!

I can’t say, that my life has lost its meaning, but it sure hurts, it really does!
Traditionally, Mondays are not my favorite day of the week, but I really was looking forward to ‘em, since the new A&J Podcast was coming out…

Well, it was nice while it lasted (11 weeks), Thanks A&J
The very best to both or you!

Cheers,

Matt
