LEGEND !!!
I take it...
...he got someone else to sing then?
Actually
he was in fine voice...my only criticism was his extended outros, he was obviously totally in the guitar zone and was enjoying himself so much he wore out a few clapping arms.
But I can't blame him ...
He started off with "Hey Hey, My My" with his legendary "Old Black" Les Paul literally destroying through a huge 8 foot magnatone speaker cab, just staggering!!!
To be honest he struggled to reclaim the heights of that opener [ or maybe that was just me trying to get to grips with what I had just witnessed ]
There's a lot of talk about Dylan and which version will turn up but there was no such worries with Neil.
Other standout moments were
"Cortez the Killer" and his "A Day in the Life" cover
A few classics ( to me) were missing but I guess with such a back catalogue to choose from that can be forgiven.
A shout out should be also made for his support act Laura Marling who with her small band were very impressive.
I would like to like Neil Young
I think the music sounds great - love his guitar playing and so on but as soon as he starts singing, I'm out of the door. I've tried for many years to get over it but I just can't.
I've got the option of seeing him at Glastonbury tomorrow night but I think I might go to see Ray Davies at the acoustic tent instead.
I know what will happen though - the Neil Young penny will drop ina a couple of months and then I'll be annoyed I didn't see him
I would catch Neil Young's first couple of tunes
and ( i'm not sure if this would be possible ) get over to catch "Waterloo sunset". Let's face it that inevitably will be the most sublime moment [ or am I being a bit parochial and banal? Not overly familiar with the entire Kinks oeuvre - even after badgering to buy "Village Green..."
But having never experienced the megalopolis that is Glasters I may be overly optimistic.
As for old Shakey..It took me a while to zone into his singing but ,once I did, it really is quite perfect.
That could work
Depending on what state I'm in of course!
Set list envy
Here's the set lists for the last 2 nights - I went to Nottingham
23rd June Trent FM Arena, Nottingham, England
Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / Mansion On The Hill / Are You Ready For The Country? / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Pocahontas / Words / Cinnamon Girl / Mother Earth / Don't Let It Bring You Down / Comes A Time / On The Way Home / Burned / Heart Of Gold / Old Man / Down By The River / Get Behind The Wheel / Rockin' In The Free World // A Day In The Life
24th June Aberdeen Exhibition Centre, Aberdeen, Scotland
Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / Mansion On The Hill / Are You Ready For The Country? / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Spirit Road / Cortez The Killer / Cinnamon Girl / Mother Earth / The Needle And The Damage Done / Comes A Time / Unknown Legend / On The Way Home / Harvest Moon / Down By The River / Get Behind The Wheel / Rockin' In The Free World // A Day In The Life
Agree that the sonic assault of the opening song was stunning. I see he did On The Way Home in Aberdeen, after saying in Nottingham 'That's the last time we ever play that'.
Thanks for track list...I'm in two minds
Apart from "Old Man" and "Don't Let it Bring you down"(absolutely gutted he didn't play that), I'm glad I didn't miss many other songs from Nottingham that would be absent from Aberdeen but I'm a bit disappointed ( for you mainly ) that the sets weren't more diverse.
but I guess I got the "Needle..."
sorry just realised you only went to Notts
so last point is moot.
found
amazing gig
Would've loved to have had Don't Let It Bring You Down at the aberdeen gig but apart from that it was a faultless set.
great video mate
thanks for sharing
sorry went all youtube there :)
Mark Radcliffe and Lauren Laverne just accused him of killing "Old Black" a vintage Guild apparently ...would I argue with the cogniscenti??? HA! ...as if.
guess when you're 64 you gotta have a well rehearsed set with not too much deviation except the interminable outros...probably could have squeezed in 3 or 4 other tunes while we were all clapping waiting for the crescendos to end.
